Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

My name is Harnoor and I am writing this letter to bring your attention to a problem which requires your immediate attention. I rent one of the apartment at your rental properties located at Sherbrook Street. One new neighbour moved to upper floor last week. I am experincing huge problems due to loud music played by him late nights.

I am working in the mornings and need proper sleep at night to start a productive day. However, due to loud noise, I could not able to sleep properly. As a result, I am experiencing bad headaches and it also negatively affecting my personal and porfessional life. I am renting this flat from last three years and I never faced such problem.

Despite my several requests to my neighbour problem continues , thus adversely affecting my health and work. I would like you to take a action and solve this problem as soon as possible. If the problem continues, unfortunately I will to end my lease agreement and will move out.

I will appreciate your assistance on this matter.

Yours sincerely,

Harnoor

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three required points: you identify that the neighbour moved in last week, explain that the noise disrupts your sleep and affects your health and work, and ask the agency to resolve the issue. Your purpose and dissatisfaction are clear throughout, and the reference to having rented the flat for three years adds useful context. The request for action is understandable, but it would be stronger if you specified practical steps, such as contacting the neighbour or enforcing quiet-hour rules. The opening also says “loud music,” while the task describes loud video games; naming the actual source would make the account more precise. Overall, the relevant points are covered and supported, though the proposed solution could be developed further.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter follows a clear progression: it introduces the complaint, explains its effects, and then states what you want the agency to do. Paragraphing helps separate these stages, and linking phrases such as “However,” “As a result,” and “Despite” make the relationships between ideas clear. The closing is also appropriate for a formal complaint. Some connections could be smoother: “Despite my several requests to my neighbour problem continues” is difficult to follow because the relationship between the requests and the continuing noise is not clearly expressed. A more direct transition, such as “Although I have asked my neighbour several times to keep the noise down, the problem continues,” would improve cohesion while preserving your logical structure.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a suitable range of vocabulary for a formal complaint, including “requires your immediate attention,” “adversely affecting,” and “lease agreement.” These choices communicate the seriousness of the situation. However, several spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision, including “experincing,” “porfessional,” and “a action.” Some phrases are also unnatural or imprecise: “huge problems” is vague, and “loud music” does not accurately describe the video-game noise in the task. Aim for more precise collocations and check spelling carefully. For example, “severe disruption,” “professional life,” and “loud gaming noise” would express your meaning more naturally and specifically.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The letter includes both simple statements and more complex sentences, such as “As a result, I am experiencing bad headaches and it also negatively affecting my personal and porfessional life.” You also attempt to show contrast and cause with “However” and “As a result.” Some grammatical errors remain, but the main message is generally understandable. Examples include “one of the apartment” instead of “one of the apartments,” “I could not able to sleep” instead of “I could not sleep,” and “I will to end my lease agreement.” The sentence beginning “Despite my several requests” also needs a clearer grammatical structure. Review verb patterns, articles, and plural forms, and proofread punctuation around clauses to make your sentences more accurate.
