Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
I hope this letter finds you well. I have been living in your flat A-503 since June, 2025. Recently, I observed that a tenant moved in next door. For the last few weeks, we have suffered from excessive and loud noise of video game every weekend.
On Saturday and Sunday, they are having parties with friends, and they have been playing video games at an excessive volume. I have two kids, and they have school on Monday early in the morning. Due to this noise, they were not able to sleep well. It affects both their study and health.
It would be appreciated if you could pay attention to this issue and talk to them to maintain decorum in the building and neighborhood. I am looking forward to your reply.
Yours sincerely,
Diya Mirza

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The letter addresses all three required points: it says the noise began “for the last few weeks,” explains that your children cannot sleep well and that this affects their studies and health, and asks the agency to speak to the neighbour. These details make the complaint relevant and understandable. However, the start date is only approximate, and the requested action could be more specific—for example, asking the agency to remind the tenant of quiet hours or investigate the disturbance. The effect on you personally is also not explained beyond the impact on your children. The response is 14 words below the required minimum, so it has less space to develop these points. More detail would make the request and its consequences clearer.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall arrangement: it introduces the tenancy and problem, describes the weekend noise and its effects, then makes a request and closes politely. Paragraphing supports this progression, and phrases such as “Due to this noise” link cause and effect. The sequence is easy to follow, though some connections could be more precise. For instance, “Recently, I observed that a tenant moved in next door” is followed by “For the last few weeks,” but the relationship between the move and the beginning of the noise could be stated more directly. The second paragraph also combines the parties, gaming, and impact without much development. A clearer timeline and a fuller final request would make the organisation feel more complete and less abrupt.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The vocabulary is adequate for a formal complaint, with useful phrases such as “excessive volume,” “maintain decorum,” and “looking forward to your reply.” The meaning remains clear throughout. There are, however, some awkward or imprecise choices: “noise of video game” is not a natural collocation, and “pay attention to this issue” is less direct than language typically used to request action. “Observed” also sounds somewhat formal and unnatural for describing a neighbour moving in. The range is sufficient to communicate the situation, but greater precision in describing the disturbance and the remedy would strengthen the letter’s tone. Aim for natural collocations and specific complaint vocabulary rather than elevated wording that does not quite fit the context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The response uses a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, including “I have two kids, and they have school on Monday early in the morning” and the cause-and-effect sentence beginning “Due to this noise.” Most sentences are understandable, and errors do not prevent the reader from following the complaint. Some grammatical choices are less controlled, however. In “For the last few weeks, we have suffered,” the present perfect is possible, but the letter would benefit from a clearer account of when the noise started. “On Saturday and Sunday, they are having parties” shifts into a present progressive for a recurring habit; “they have parties” would be more suitable. The opening also uses “Dear Sir” rather than the requested salutation. More consistent tense choices and a wider range of accurately controlled structures would improve the letter.
