Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Madam,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to express my concern about one of our neighnours playing video games loudly on a late night. This issue is arisen from the same neighbour who also rented their apartment from the same agency as I did.
It has been couple of months since I am facing this issue, but from the past two days it has been exaggerated. Therefore, I am serving this issue on your plate.
As a result of this, I have become restless and sleeplessness. I got dark circle under my eyes. In addition to that, having a lack of sleep also affecting my daily chores. Furthermore, taking sleeping pills is affecting my gut health.
I am requesting the agency to take this issue seriously and take necessary actions to resolve this issue as soon as possible whether by sending a formal notice or by informing them personally.
I am hoping this issue resolves immediately or else I have to take actions from my side by informing the police.
Thank you so much for understanding this concern.
Best regards,
Priyanka.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The letter addresses all three required points: it says the noise has been happening for a couple of months, explains its effects on sleep and daily routines, and asks the agency to intervene through a notice or personal contact. The request is clear and relevant, and the consequences help show why the matter is serious. However, the timing is not fully clear: “from the past two days it has been exaggerated” does not explain precisely what changed, and the agency is not given a specific practical request, such as investigating or contacting the neighbour by a stated deadline. The threat to contact the police is understandable but could be framed more diplomatically. More precise development of these details would make the response more complete and persuasive.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The message follows a sensible overall sequence: it introduces the complaint, gives its duration, describes the impact, and then requests action. Paragraphing also separates the main stages of the letter, while connectors such as “As a result” and “Furthermore” help signal relationships between ideas. Some linking is mechanical or unclear, however. “Therefore, I am serving this issue on your plate” does not clearly connect the preceding information to the complaint, and “this issue” is repeated several times in the request and closing. The final warning about contacting the police could be integrated more smoothly with the proposed agency action. Clearer references and less repetitive transitions would make the progression more natural and controlled.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The response uses enough vocabulary to communicate the complaint and its effects, including “restless,” “daily chores,” “formal notice,” and “resolve.” It also attempts more specific expressions, but several choices are inaccurate or unnatural and sometimes make the meaning less clear. For example, “serving this issue on your plate” is not an appropriate way to say that the agency is being asked to handle a problem, while “this issue is arisen” and “dark circle” show problems with word form or number. “Sleeplessness” is also awkward in “I have become restless and sleeplessness.” These errors fit a limited but functional range: the main message remains understandable, but more accurate collocations and forms are needed for clearer, more natural writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The letter includes both simple statements and attempts at longer structures, such as “In addition to that, having a lack of sleep also affecting my daily chores.” The intended relationships between ideas are generally understandable, but several grammatical errors occur in verb forms, sentence construction, and articles. For instance, “It has been couple of months since I am facing this issue” needs a more accurate article and tense pattern, and “having a lack of sleep also affecting” lacks a correctly formed main verb. “I am hoping this issue resolves” also uses an awkward tense construction. These examples show that more complex forms are being attempted, but control is not yet consistent. Practise accurate present-perfect and present-simple patterns, and check that each sentence has a complete, correctly formed verb.
