Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to complain about my neighbor, who plays video games at a very loud volume.

Two weeks ago, I noticed that someone in my neighborhood plays online games with aggressive volumes. I understand he might enjoy playing them this way, but this approach not only disturbs me but also other residents in the colony.

As for why it affects me, I have an upcoming exam next month; therefore, I have to sleep after studying all day. But due to his blasting noise, I am unable to rest peacefully, which is affecting my performance in my studies.

I encountered him myself and asked him to stop this behaviour, but he did not listen to me and kept on playing at full volume. Hence, I am asking you to either stop him from disturbing the neighbors or shift him to another flat for the time being.

I hope you will look into this matter. Looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours faithfully,

Sarah

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three required points and maintains a clear, appropriate purpose. You identify the problem as beginning “Two weeks ago,” explain its effect through your upcoming exam and difficulty resting, and make a direct request for the agency to intervene. The detail that you have already spoken to the neighbour also supports your request. These points are relevant and sufficiently extended, although the start of the problem could be more precise: “someone in my neighborhood” is less clear than explicitly identifying the neighbour who rents through the agency. The request to “shift him to another flat” is also quite forceful; asking the agency to contact the tenant and enforce quiet hours would make the proposed action more practical and measured.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter is organised in a clear sequence: complaint, when the issue began, its impact, your attempt to resolve it, and the action requested. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these stages, and linking expressions such as “As for why it affects me,” “therefore,” and “Hence” make the relationships between ideas clear. The progression is logical throughout. Some transitions are slightly formulaic or awkward, particularly “As for why it affects me,” which sounds more like an essay signpost than natural letter writing. The opening also repeats the general complaint before the next paragraph gives its timing. A more direct transition into the timeline, followed by a concise closing request, would make the cohesion feel more flexible and less signposted.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use enough vocabulary to explain the complaint and its consequences, including “disturbs,” “rest peacefully,” “performance,” and “look into this matter.” There are also attempts at more expressive language, such as “blasting noise,” but some choices are imprecise or unnatural for a formal complaint. “Aggressive volumes” is not a natural collocation, and “in the colony” may not clearly convey the intended meaning to an international reader. “Approach” is also vague when referring to the neighbour’s loud gaming. These choices do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and naturalness. Aim for conventional, specific phrases such as “excessively loud,” “other residents in the building,” and “the noise is disrupting my sleep.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

The letter includes a useful range of sentence forms, including a relative clause in “my neighbor, who plays video games,” a contrast with “but,” and a cause-and-effect sentence using “therefore.” Most sentences are clear and grammatically controlled, and punctuation generally supports the meaning. A few constructions could be more accurate or natural. In “I noticed that someone … plays online games,” the past reporting verb would normally be followed by “was playing” if describing what you observed at that time. “I have an upcoming exam next month; therefore, I have to sleep” is understandable, but the relationship is more naturally expressed as needing adequate sleep. The sentence beginning “I encountered him myself and asked him” is also slightly awkward in structure. Refining these patterns would strengthen control while preserving your varied sentence forms.
