Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear sir,
I am writing to express my concerns regarding the tenant living in the flat who plays video games at very late in the night for so long. At this time the building is managed by your agency. I am currently experiencing severe noice disctrubances cause by the loud video games being played for long time.
The problem began approximately 2 weeks ago. Prior to this, the buidling was so quite and peacefu; however, late night gaming sessions have become so noicy that we are getting disturbed with this almost each day. The noice starts around the 11:00 PM in the night and coutinues until the early hours of morning, often involving shouting and abuses, and tremendous amount of bass and heavy loud sound effects of gun shooting.
This constant distrubance is severely impacting my quality life. Because the wall are very thin, the excessive volume prevent me to sleep or even thinking about to get into my room. For this my work and throughout the day I feel very exhausted. My performance at work now getting noticed by the seniors and managers becuase of the lack of the focus and concentration.
I would appericiate it if you could intervence and cotant the tenant directly to remind them of the quite hours policy and no sound or no playing games after 10:00 PM would be the best approach you could tell him to follow. I request that a formal warning be issused.
I look forward to hearing this from you.
yours faithfully,
John

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0
The letter covers all three required points clearly and develops them with relevant detail. You identify when the issue began (“approximately 2 weeks ago”), explain its effects on sleep, energy and work, and make a specific request for the agency to contact the tenant and issue a formal warning. Details such as the noise continuing into the early morning and the thin walls help show the seriousness of the problem. The request for quiet hours after 10 p.m. is also practical. To make the response even more complete, clarify whether you have already tried speaking to the neighbour, if applicable, and state what follow-up you expect from the agency. Overall, the purpose and requested action are clear throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter has a clear progression: you introduce the complaint, describe when and how the noise occurs, explain its impact, and then request action. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and linking expressions such as “Prior to this,” “Because,” and “For this” help connect ideas. The reader can follow the main message without difficulty. Some connections are less smooth, however: “At this time the building is managed by your agency” interrupts the opening, and “For this my work…” does not clearly express the relationship between the noise and its consequences. The closing also sounds slightly awkward. To strengthen cohesion, remove information that does not advance the complaint and use clearer transitions, such as “As a result,” before describing the effect on your work.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a useful range of complaint-related vocabulary, including “severe,” “excessive volume,” “quality [of] life,” “intervene,” and “formal warning.” Specific descriptions such as “bass” and “sound effects” make the problem vivid. However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable and sometimes make the reader pause: “noice,” “disctrubances,” “quite” for “quiet,” and “abuses” are examples. Some combinations are also unnatural, such as “tremendous amount of bass and heavy loud sound effects” and “quality life.” Aim for accurate, natural collocations and proofread carefully. For example, “noise disturbance,” “shouting and abusive language,” and “quality of life” would express your meaning more precisely while keeping the tone appropriate for a formal complaint.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast with “however” and a cause-and-effect explanation beginning “Because the wall are very thin.” The overall meaning is generally recoverable, but errors in sentence structure, verb forms, agreement and articles occur often enough to affect fluency. For example, “the excessive volume prevent me to sleep” needs subject–verb agreement and a different verb pattern; “my performance at work now getting noticed” is missing an auxiliary; and “I feel very exhausted” is not connected clearly to the preceding clause. There are also awkward constructions such as “thinking about to get into my room.” Practise complete clauses and common patterns such as “prevent someone from doing something,” then check each sentence for a subject and a correctly formed verb.
