Student answer (Band 5.5)

Dear sir,

Hope you are doing good. Your accommodation agency rented me a flat from last 5 months and i am writing a letter to complaint you againt my neighbour who aslo your client. As they shifted here last month intially they were very co-oprative with us, from last 2 weeks they make extreme noise at late night specialy, and it creates problems for my family. They play video games at night mostly after 10 pm which is our sleeping time. Because of busy schedule we have to take proper rest and sleep, the loud sound disturbed our sleep. As my old parents are on medication, doctor suggested them to stay away from loud sound, so they can recover easily. Though Last week i warn them, but they did not notice that, and take it seriously.

I requested you to take the strick action against them. Although i can understand that everyone have their personal life, they should decrease the volume of the noice.

i will wait for your answer and you action .

Your faithfully,

XYZ.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three required points: you explain that the noise began about two weeks ago, describe its effect on your family and your parents’ recovery, and ask the agency to take action. The details about gaming after 10 p.m. and your earlier warning make the complaint relevant and clear. However, the request for action is not fully specific: “take the strict action” is vague, and the suggestion to lower the volume could be framed as a clear request for the agency to contact the neighbour and ensure quiet at night. Some details, such as the parents’ medication, are useful but could be linked more directly to the urgency of resolving the problem. Overall, the task is covered, though some points are developed more fully than others.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The information follows a generally sensible order: you introduce the complaint, explain when the noise started and its effects, then state what you want the agency to do. Time references such as “last month,” “from last 2 weeks,” and “Last week” help establish the sequence. However, most of the letter is presented in one long paragraph, so the different purposes are not clearly separated. Some connections are also awkward or unclear, particularly “Though Last week i warn them, but they did not notice that,” where the relationship between the ideas is difficult to follow. Use separate paragraphs for the problem and its effects, then the requested action, and choose linking words that express the relationship precisely.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use relevant vocabulary for a complaint, including “loud,” “disturbed our sleep,” “medication,” and “take action,” so the reader can understand the main issue. However, the range is limited and several spelling and word-choice errors make the letter less natural, such as “complaint” where the verb “complain” is needed, “noice,” and “co-oprative.” Some phrases are also imprecise or unnatural, including “stay away from loud sound” and “take the strick action.” Aim for accurate, conventional expressions used in formal complaints, such as “excessive noise,” “contact the neighbour,” and “reduce the volume.” More precise vocabulary would make your concerns sound clearer and more professional.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The letter attempts both simple and more complex sentences, for example the sentence beginning “As my old parents are on medication” and the contrast introduced by “Although.” These attempts help convey reasons and contrast, but some sentence structures and verb forms are inaccurate. In “Your accommodation agency rented me a flat from last 5 months,” the tense and time expression need correction; “I warn them” should be “I warned them,” and “they did not notice that, and take it seriously” needs consistent verb forms. Capitalisation and punctuation are also inconsistent, and several sentences run together, as in “disturbed our sleep. As my old parents…” Review past and present forms, articles, and sentence boundaries to improve accuracy while retaining varied structures.
