Student answer (Band 5.5)

Dear Sir/Madam

I would like to complaint about the neighbour who rent a flat from your agenct, living next door to me plays very loud video games late at night.

The main problem starts from last week, when he plays vedio games midnight and volume of the vedio player was very loud.

It disturbs my sleeping schedule beacuse i am working early morning. I did not sleep properly from last week as a result it effect on my work.

I would like to take a strict action about this and make a new rules and regulations about the playing vedio at low volume, so it will do not disturb the other neighbours.

I would really appreciate if you take action as soon as possible.

king regards

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three required points: you say the problem began “last week,” explain that it disrupts your sleep because you work early, and ask the agency to take action. The impact on your work is relevant, but the requested action is less fully developed: “make a new rules and regulations” is vague, and it is not clear whether you want the neighbour contacted or a specific quiet-hours rule introduced. The letter is also 30 words below the 150-word minimum, so there is limited space to explain the situation and request in detail. Add a concrete example of the late-night noise and specify the action you expect the agency to take.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a coherent overall arrangement: the opening identifies the complaint, the next paragraph gives its timing, the following paragraph explains its effect, and the final paragraph requests action. This makes the main message easy to follow. However, the progression is quite brief, and some links between ideas are mechanical or unclear. For example, “as a result it effect on my work” attempts to connect poor sleep with work, but the relationship would be clearer if expressed in a complete, well-linked sentence. Paragraphing is appropriate, though the request and closing could be developed more fully. Use clear transitions to show cause and effect, and keep each paragraph focused on one part of the complaint.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use relevant vocabulary for the situation, including “neighbour,” “late at night,” “sleeping schedule,” and “take action,” so the reader can understand the complaint. However, the range is limited and several spelling or word-choice errors reduce accuracy: “agenct,” “vedio,” and “complaint” in “I would like to complaint” are noticeable. Some phrases are also unnatural or imprecise, such as “volume of the vedio player” and “strict action.” Choose standard collocations for a formal complaint, such as “the volume of the game” and “take appropriate action.” Proofreading spelling and selecting more precise phrases would make the letter sound more professional.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You communicate through a mix of short statements and some attempts to connect ideas, such as “I did not sleep properly from last week as a result it effect on my work.” However, some grammatical errors affect clarity and control. In the opening, “the neighbour who rent … plays” has an incorrect verb form and an awkward sentence structure; “the neighbour who rents … is playing” would be clearer. Other examples include “The main problem starts from last week” and “make a new rules,” where tense and agreement need attention. The sentence “so it will do not disturb” also has an incorrect negative construction. Practise accurate past and present forms, subject–verb agreement, and sentence boundaries while retaining your clear basic message.
