Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to complain about my naigbhours because of the loud noises that they make at night.

My name is Sonia and I rent an apartment from The Sunset apartments. I moved there on September 1st this year. Initially, everything was fine, it has been a couple of months since they stared making really loud noises at night.

The loud music and game noises really affect my schedule as I am not able to sleep well at night. I usually work at early mornings due to lack of sleep, I am getting less productive at my work. I feel sleepy whole day Also, I am not able to focus on my studies and my exams are coming soon.

I would appreciate if you can talk to them and find a solution for it . I am willing to support in any way whenever you need it. If it continues, I would like you to take further actions.

Thank you for your time and assistance.

Yours faithfully,

Sonia

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three required points and maintains a clear, appropriate complaint throughout. You identify when the issue began (“it has been a couple of months”), explain its effects on sleep, work productivity and exam preparation, and ask the agency to speak to the neighbour and take further action if needed. These details make the request relevant and give the reader a clear reason to respond. To strengthen the response further, make the timeline more precise—for example, state the month or approximate date the noise started—and specify what action you would prefer, such as reminding the tenant of quiet hours. The impact is well supported, though the requested solution could be developed more fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: it introduces the complaint, gives background, describes the effects, and ends with a request and polite closing. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and links such as “Initially,” “Also,” and “If it continues” guide the reader through the message. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some flexibility in linking ideas. However, a few connections are awkward or unclear. In “I usually work at early mornings due to lack of sleep, I am getting less productive,” two ideas are joined without a suitable sentence boundary, and the relationship between working early and reduced productivity is not expressed smoothly. Use clearer sentence boundaries and transitions to make progression more consistently natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the complaint and its consequences, including “loud noises,” “not able to sleep well,” “less productive,” and “take further actions.” The language is generally understandable, but the range is limited and several choices or spelling errors reduce precision. “Naigbhours” is misspelled, while “loud music and game noises” is less exact than describing loud video-game sounds. “I feel sleepy whole day” is also an awkward phrase, and “find a solution for it” is vague. Aim for more precise, natural expressions suited to a formal complaint, such as “disruptive gaming noise,” “throughout the day,” and “resolve the issue.” Proofreading spelling will also improve clarity.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The letter includes a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, and the main message remains clear. For example, “If it continues, I would like you to take further actions” uses a conditional structure appropriately. Some grammatical and punctuation errors remain, however. In “Initially, everything was fine, it has been a couple of months since they stared…,” a comma joins two independent clauses, and the tense and timeline need clearer control. “I usually work at early mornings” and “I feel sleepy whole day” also show errors in article or preposition use. Separate complete sentences with a full stop or suitable conjunction, and check articles and prepositions in common phrases. These corrections would make the letter more accurate while preserving its clear meaning.
