Student answer (Band 5.5)

Dear sir,

I hope you are in good health and wealth, I have been going through a very difficult situation from past weeks and on top of that last night i had a terrible night.

Soon, after dinner when i went to bed for sleep, sharp 10:15 Pm there was very loud noise from my neighbour who has just moved very recently. As i mentioned earlier i have some issues that im dealing with and noise of the video games gave me huge headache. and i couldnt sleep that day and which eventually effected my whole day.

I also lost my appoinment which suppose to be attended early morning 7AM since my sleep was insufficient.

I really appreciate if you could send a notice to the neighbouring house mate to lower the volume and keep a basic ethics how to live in a friendly society, if there is nothing done in a day or two let me know i would like to leave the house.

looking forward to hear from you.

Thank you

Anjana

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three points: you say the neighbour recently moved in, describe the loud gaming noise and its effects, and ask the agency to issue a notice and respond within a day or two. The headache, lost sleep and missed appointment make the impact personal and relevant. However, the start of the problem is not fully clear: “Soon, after dinner” describes when the noise occurred, while “from past weeks” suggests a longer period, and these details do not establish when the disturbance began. The requested action is also somewhat limited; you could ask the agency to investigate, remind the neighbour of quiet hours, and confirm what steps it will take. These details would develop the less fully addressed parts of the letter.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a recognisable progression from explaining the disturbance, to describing its consequences, to requesting action. Separate paragraphs help distinguish these points, and phrases such as “As i mentioned earlier” attempt to connect related information. However, some links are awkward or unclear: “and noise of the video games gave me huge headache. and i couldnt sleep that day and which eventually…” joins several effects in a confusing sequence. The opening also combines a greeting and several ideas in one long sentence. Use clearer sentence boundaries and organise the account into a concise paragraph about when the noise began, followed by its effects and a separate, direct request. This would make the overall arrangement easier to follow and reduce mechanical linking.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary to explain the situation, including “very loud noise,” “video games,” “headache,” “insufficient” sleep and “lower the volume.” These choices make the central problem understandable. However, some expressions are imprecise or unnatural for a formal complaint: “good health and wealth,” “sharp 10:15 Pm,” “basic ethics,” and “neighbouring house mate” do not convey the intended meaning naturally. There are also spelling and word-form slips, such as “appoinment” and “effected” where “affected” is needed. Aim for precise, conventional phrases such as “at exactly 10:15 p.m.,” “noise from my neighbour’s flat,” and “disturbed my sleep.” This would improve accuracy and suit the letter’s purpose.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, for example explaining the noise and its consequences in connected clauses. The main message remains understandable, but some sentence structures are faulty or difficult to control. In “I hope you are in good health and wealth, I have been going through…,” two independent clauses are joined with a comma; use a full stop or a suitable conjunction. “I really appreciate if you could send…” needs “would really appreciate it if,” while “which suppose to be attended” lacks the correct verb form and subject. Capitalisation and punctuation are also inconsistent, including lowercase “i” and sentence fragments beginning “and.” Build accuracy by using shorter complete sentences, then check verb forms, articles and sentence boundaries.
