Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to complain about disturbing level of noise that comes from my neighbour's flat especially at nights.
I have moved to this property near about six months ago, first five months went very smoothly. I was really enjoying my stay here, but from last month since the new neighbours moved in flat number 207. It is becoming quite hard for me live here due to the loud voices of video games that they usually play at night.
I have to sleep early because of my early morning job. Owing to these voices I cannot sleep well as they play such games at loud volumes till midnight. This sleep deprivation is also responsible for affecting my productivity at work. I am unable to concentrate on my job, and I usually feel sleepy almost everyday.
It would be really appreciated if you could look at this matter urgently. You can suggest them to reduce volume of video games while playing, or if they still keep it continue, you can also give them a warning.
I hope you will consider on this situation as soon as possible. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Yours faithfully,
Harpreet Kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The letter addresses all three required points and maintains a clear, appropriately formal purpose. You explain that the issue began after the new neighbours moved in “from last month,” describe the effects on your sleep and work, and request that the agency ask them to lower the volume or issue a warning. These details make the complaint specific and relevant. The impact is particularly well supported by your early-morning job and difficulty concentrating. To develop the response further, clarify the timing and frequency of the gaming—for example, how many nights a week it happens—and make the requested action more precise, such as asking the agency to contact the tenants and follow up if the noise continues. This would make the ideas more fully developed and less general.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter has a clear progression: you introduce the complaint, explain when it began, describe its consequences, and then state what you want the agency to do. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and links such as “Owing to these voices” and “This sleep deprivation” connect the noise to its effects. The opening and closing also suit a formal letter. Some connections are less smooth, particularly “but from last month since the new neighbours moved in,” where the timeline is compressed and the sentence does not flow clearly. The final request also combines two possible actions without explaining when each should apply. Use clearer transitions and separate the agency’s initial response from the action to take if the problem persists.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use enough vocabulary to explain the complaint and its consequences, including “sleep deprivation,” “productivity,” and “concentrate,” which communicate the impact clearly. The language is generally understandable, but some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “disturbing level of noise,” “loud voices of video games,” and “consider on this situation.” “Voices” is also imprecise for the sound of games; “noise” or “game audio” would fit better. The phrase “keep it continue” is unclear, and “almost everyday” should be expressed as “almost every day.” Aim for more natural complaint-letter collocations and check word forms and spacing. This would make your adequate range more precise and controlled.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the cause-and-effect construction “Owing to these voices I cannot sleep well” and the conditional request beginning “if they still keep it continue.” Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect accuracy. For example, “hard for me live here” needs “hard for me to live here,” and “I have moved to this property near about six months ago” has an awkward tense construction; “I moved here about six months ago” is more accurate. The sentence beginning “but from last month since…” also lacks a clear grammatical structure. Practise infinitive patterns, past-time expressions, and sentence construction so that complex ideas remain clear and more consistently accurate.
