Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Madam,

I hope you are doing well upon receiving my letter.

I have been staying in this apartment for almost six months and I am paying my rent on time. I am writing you to raise my concern regarding the noise of video games from my neighbor.

The problem started last summer break when the two students started to play video games and creating too much noise to the whole flat. They are starting to play in the evening until midnight, they play the video games too much loud with their voice shouting and laughing while playing. This resulted me distraction and disturbance of my sleep. I usually sleep around 10 o'clock because of my early shift at work; however I couldn't sleep until they finish at around 1 o'clock. I always have headache going to work because of lack of sleep and rest. Additionally, there are times that I am late to work because of difficulty getting up to bed. With this, it is causing me trouble at work and bad performance.

I hope that you can talk to them to lessen the volume of their video games and if possible to avoid any noise after 10 o'clock in the evening.

I wish for an urgent solution on this matter.

Yours faithfully,

Jessica

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three requirements clearly. You identify when the issue began (“last summer break”), explain its effects with relevant detail—poor sleep, headaches, lateness and reduced performance at work—and make a specific request for the agency to speak to the neighbours and reduce noise after 10 p.m. The purpose and desired outcome remain clear throughout, and the effects are extended rather than merely listed. To make the response more fully developed, clarify the timeline: you say the neighbours play until midnight, but later say they finish at around 1 o’clock. You could also mention whether you have already tried speaking to them, though this is not required. Overall, the task is handled effectively and with a clear, appropriate request.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter follows a sensible progression: it introduces your tenancy and the complaint, describes the noise and its consequences, then states what action you want. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and linking expressions such as “however” and “Additionally” make the sequence of effects easy to follow. The closing is also appropriate. Some connections are less smooth, however. The sentence beginning “The problem started last summer break” combines the start of the problem with several details about the neighbours’ behaviour, while “With this” is an imprecise link to the consequences at work. The repeated references to “they” could also be clearer by identifying the neighbours consistently. More precise transitions and reference would make the organisation feel more controlled.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to explain the complaint and its consequences, including “disturbance of my sleep,” “early shift,” “headache,” and “bad performance.” The reader can understand the main message, but several noticeable word-choice and collocation problems make the language less natural. For example, “play the video games too much loud” and “difficulty getting up to bed” do not express the intended ideas idiomatically; “noise of video games” could also be phrased more naturally as “noise from their video games.” Some wording is repetitive, particularly the repeated use of “noise” and “play.” Aim to use accurate, natural phrases for volume, sleep disruption and work performance, rather than adding more complex vocabulary before these basic combinations are secure.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of sentence forms, including longer sentences with reasons and contrast, as in “I usually sleep around 10 o’clock because of my early shift at work; however…” This helps convey how the noise affects you. However, errors occur in several structures and sometimes make the reader pause. In “The problem started … when the two students started to play video games and creating,” the verb forms are not parallel. “They are starting to play” is also inconsistent with the past-time account, and “This resulted me distraction” has an incorrect grammatical pattern. The sentence about being late because of “difficulty getting up to bed” is similarly awkwardly constructed. Practise parallel verb forms, past-tense consistency and patterns such as “resulted in” or “caused.” Greater accuracy in these areas would make your varied sentences easier to read.
