Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to express my frustration because of loud noises coming from the flat in my neighbourhood. It has been couple of days since the guys in the flat talk loudly over the microphones which create disturbance in the night time. I noticed that they have their friends over for the video games which create unnecessary noises in the midnight.

Moreover, it started affecting my sleep and overall health. Due to less hours of rest, i feel symptoms of tiredness like buring eyes, dizziness, and headcahe in the day time as well. As a result, i struggle focusing at work which reduces work prodctivity and efficiency.

I would really appreciate if you could send a warning to those guys, so they make less noise in the nightime. Also, please give them the reminder that guests are not allowed to stay overnight. I am looking forward to hear from you soon.

With regards,

Simi

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three required points: you identify the problem as late-night gaming, explain its effects on your sleep and work, and ask the agency to intervene. The impact is particularly clear in the examples of tiredness and difficulty concentrating. However, the timing is only partly explained: “It has been couple of days” gives a duration, but a more precise start date or context would make this clearer. The requested action is also somewhat narrow; asking for a warning is relevant, but you could specify that the agency should investigate or ensure the noise stops during quiet hours. The request about overnight guests is not clearly connected to the stated gaming-noise problem, so explain its relevance or omit it. Overall, the purpose is clear, though some details need fuller development and precision.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your ideas are arranged in a clear sequence: the opening explains the complaint, the second paragraph describes its effects, and the final paragraph makes a request. Paragraphing supports the letter’s purpose, and linking expressions such as “Moreover” and “As a result” help show how the noise affects you. This coherent overall organisation is a strength. Some connections could be more precise, however. For example, the shift from loud gaming to “guests are not allowed to stay overnight” is abrupt, as the relationship between guests and the noise is not explained. The opening also repeats the idea of noise in two consecutive sentences. To strengthen progression, group the details about when and how the noise occurs, then make each requested action directly follow from that problem.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the complaint and its consequences, including “disturbance,” “tiredness,” “dizziness,” and “productivity.” These choices make the effects on your daily life understandable. However, several expressions are imprecise or unnatural for a formal complaint, such as “guys,” “unnecessary noises,” and “in the midnight.” There are also spelling errors, including “buring,” “headcahe,” and “prodctivity,” which reduce accuracy. Some wording is repetitive, particularly the repeated references to noise. Aim for more precise, formal phrases such as “the tenants,” “excessive noise,” and “late at night,” and proofread carefully for spelling. This would make your vocabulary more controlled and appropriate to the agency-letter context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, and most of the message remains easy to understand. For instance, “Due to less hours of rest, I feel symptoms of tiredness…” gives a clear cause-and-effect relationship, while “As a result” introduces a further consequence. Some grammatical errors remain. In “It has been couple of days,” the article is missing; “which create disturbance” has an unclear subject and needs a more accurate verb form; and “I would really appreciate if” requires “it” after “appreciate.” The closing phrase “I am looking forward to hear” should use a gerund after “to.” Capitalise “I” consistently and check punctuation around requests. These are generally understandable, but correcting them would improve control.
