Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

Hope you have been doing well, I am writing to bring your attention to the fact that one of my neighbour has been causing concern to my family with the loud video games noises specially on the later half of the night.

It all started around one month back, when Mr. John brought a gaming set for boys, and since then they have been continously wreaking havoc in the neighbourhood.

Often, on the weekends, they gather all their friends from the street and shout loudly so much that even my toddler wakes up at night and cries inconsolably due to the noise. Last week, they even had a brawl which shook our home due sounds of multiple glasses breaking while they fought one another. This has now made my parents very concerned too.

I would like you to have a discussion with his family and counsel them regarding the importance neighbours' rights, both legally and socially, and advice them for decent behaviour. I would be very grateful for your positive input in this matter.

Yours Faithfully,

Qamar

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three required points and maintains a clear, appropriately formal request. You identify when the issue began (“around one month back”), explain its impact through your toddler waking and your parents becoming concerned, and ask the agency to speak with the neighbour’s family. These details make the complaint specific and relevant. The account of a fight and breaking glasses adds context, although it shifts attention somewhat from the central issue of late-night gaming noise. To strengthen the response further, clarify whether the noise occurs every night or mainly at weekends, and state a practical outcome you want, such as quiet hours or a follow-up from the agency, rather than relying mainly on general advice to the family.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The information is arranged in a sensible progression: you introduce the complaint, explain when it began, describe its effects, and finish with a request. Paragraphing helps distinguish the background from the consequences and proposed action. Time markers such as “since then,” “Often,” and “Last week” also guide the reader through events. However, the opening sentence combines the greeting, purpose, and several details, making it less easy to follow, and the shift from gaming noise to a brawl is abrupt. Some references, including “they” and “his family,” require the reader to infer exactly who is involved. A clearer opening and more explicit links between the noise, the gatherings, and the agency’s requested action would make cohesion more flexible and precise.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal complaint, including “causing concern,” “inconsolably,” “counsel,” and “neighbours’ rights.” These choices help convey the seriousness of the situation, and the meaning remains clear. There are, however, several inaccurate or unnatural expressions: “video games noises,” “on the later half of the night,” and “positive input” do not sound idiomatic in this context. “Wreaking havoc” is vivid but somewhat overstated for describing noise, while “brawl” introduces a separate and more serious issue. Aim for precise, natural collocations and check spelling, as in “continuously.” More measured wording would also suit a formal letter to an agency.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response includes both simple and more complex sentence forms, such as the time clause beginning “when Mr. John brought…” and the sentence explaining that the toddler wakes and cries because of the noise. Most ideas are understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. The opening has a comma splice (“Hope you have been doing well, I am writing…”), and “one of my neighbour” has a number-agreement error. In “due sounds,” a preposition is missing, while “advice them” uses a noun where the verb form is needed. The request sentence also has an unclear structure around “regarding the importance neighbours’ rights.” Use full stops or a linking conjunction in the opening, and check agreement, articles, and sentence patterns when editing.
