Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I hope you are doing well. I, Kisa Fatima from flat 220, Brookes building, is writing this letter to complain regarding my neighbour, flat 219.
From the past couple of days, these people are playing an unusual loud sound system after midnight which creates a-lot of disturbance. I am a working women and follows a steady routine throughout the week, wakes up at seven in the morning and sleeps by ten at night. But from almost ten days due to this unbearable sound of the video games and peers cheering each other, I am unable to sleep properly which is affecting me immensly.
It has been negatively affecting my work-life balance as it is causing a huge impact on my performance at the organization. I am a full time employee and a part-time student which gives me no or less time for myself. I manage my sleep according to my schedule. My boss has already given me a notice for my poor work performance yesterday and I do not want any other notice regarding my assignments at work premises.
Sleep deprieved schedule is not something I tolerate so I had already asked them to slow down their system after midnight atleast but I am unable see any valueable outcome. Kindly ask them to either slow down the volume after midnight or play during the day. Send them a strict notice so that they ponder upon it, otherwise either shift me to another place near my company or I will have to eventually leave this appartment. Please assist me in this matter.
I look forward to hearing from you at you earliest.
Yours faithfully,
Kisa.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The letter addresses all three required points and maintains a clear, appropriate complaint throughout. You identify when the issue began (“from almost ten days”), explain its effects on your sleep, work performance and studies, and make specific requests: asking the neighbours to reduce the volume or play during the day, issuing a notice, or considering a move. These details make the problem convincing and the requested action clear. To strengthen the response further, make the timeline more consistent: “from the past couple of days” conflicts with “almost ten days.” The request to move is also less developed than the other solutions; briefly explaining what kind of alternative accommodation you need would make this point more precise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall structure: it introduces the complaint, describes the noise and its consequences, then sets out the action you want. Paragraphing helps the reader follow this progression, and links such as “But” and “otherwise” show relationships between ideas. However, some connections are repetitive or not fully smooth. The effects on work and study are explained across two paragraphs, with overlapping points about your schedule and performance; these could be grouped more tightly. The timeline also shifts from “a couple of days” to “almost ten days,” which interrupts the flow of information. More precise referencing and a concise sequence of problem, impact and requested remedy would make cohesion more flexible and less mechanical.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary to explain the complaint and its consequences, including “unbearable,” “work-life balance,” “performance” and “strict notice.” These choices communicate the seriousness of the situation, and the meaning remains clear. There are, however, some inaccurate or unnatural word combinations and spelling errors that limit precision: “unusual loud sound system,” “a-lot of disturbance,” “sleep deprieved schedule” and “valueable outcome.” “Peers cheering each other” is also an imprecise description of the neighbours’ behaviour. Aim for natural collocations and check spelling carefully; for example, describe “loud video-game noise” and say that it “disrupts my sleep.” This would make the vocabulary more controlled and appropriate to a formal complaint.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response includes both simple and more complex sentence forms, such as the sentence explaining how poor sleep affects your work and studies. Most meaning is understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. In the opening, “I … is writing” has subject–verb disagreement; “I … am writing” is needed. The sentence “I am a working women and follows …, wakes … and sleeps” shifts between subjects and verb forms, so it should be recast with consistent agreement, such as “I am a working woman who follows … and wakes ….” There are also errors in constructions such as “I am unable see” and “I look forward to hearing from you at you earliest.” Review infinitives, possessives and sentence boundaries. Greater accuracy across these structures would improve control.
