Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my disatisfaction with the next door neighbour who causes a lot of disturbance that continues over the night.

To start, I have rented the house last month from your agency and I insisted on the peaceful atmosphere of the neighbourhood. Unfortunatly, I found myself in a critical situation, where the next door neighbour plays online games for the whole night, resulting in inburable noise.

I need to mention that I am a university student, I have to attend morning classes and prepare for my exams, but the loud music prevent me from sleeping adequately. Consequently, this challenging situation would affected negatively my academic year as well as my well-being.

I would appreciate if you could find an urgent solution to my problem. Either you provide me with an alternative flat far from any noise or handle legally the issue with the disturbing neighbour.

looking forward for your response.

Yours faithfully.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The letter addresses all three requested points: you indicate the problem began after you moved in last month, explain that night-time gaming disrupts sleep and study, and ask the agency either to arrange another flat or address the neighbour’s behaviour. The purpose and your dissatisfaction are clear. The request for action is particularly direct, but the account of when the noise started could be more precise: “last month” refers to when you rented the flat, while the exact onset of the gaming is not stated. The effects are relevant but could be developed with a specific consequence, such as difficulty concentrating in morning classes. This covers the task well, while some details remain less fully explained.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The information follows a clear progression from the complaint, to its effects, and then to the action you want. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and phrases such as “To start” and “Consequently” make the relationships between ideas easy to follow. The letter also maintains a consistent focus on the noise problem. Some linking is a little mechanical, and the opening paragraph combines several points that could be separated more cleanly. The final request would be easier to scan if the two alternatives were presented in a more parallel form. Overall, the organisation is logical and the reader can follow the message without difficulty.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a suitable range of complaint-related vocabulary, including “disturbance,” “peaceful atmosphere,” “adequately,” and “alternative flat.” These choices communicate the situation clearly, and attempts at more formal language suit a letter to an agency. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural: “inburable noise” appears to be a misspelling or incorrect choice, “insisted on the peaceful atmosphere” does not express your meaning naturally, and “handle legally the issue” is awkward. There are also spelling errors in “disatisfaction” and “Unfortunatly.” More precise, conventional phrases would make the complaint sound more fluent and professional.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The letter includes both simple statements and more complex structures, such as the sentence beginning “I need to mention that I am a university student” and the result clause introduced by “Consequently.” The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “I have rented the house last month” uses an unsuitable tense with a finished time reference; “the loud music prevent” has a subject–verb agreement error; and “this challenging situation would affected” has an incorrect verb form. The closing also needs a complete, correctly capitalised sentence. Review tense choice, agreement, and modal verb patterns, while retaining the range of sentence forms you have attempted.
