Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir,
I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing this letter to express my concern regarding my neighbour. As I thought that both of us have rented a flat through your agency, so you might help me out with this problem.
Recently, my neighbour has started playing games on loud noise and he plays till late night. This started couple off days back, and this loud sound of video games bothers me a lot. As, I am enrolled in my final semester and my exams are overhead, so I get very much distracted from it. My sleep also gets runied and it is so difficult to concentrate on my studies.
I would appricate if you look into this issue and help me out with it. If you could given him short formal notice like during night time, if he can keep his gaming sound bit lower or might wear his headphones or something like that. But during day time it is completely fine if he play games on lound voice.
I would be looking forward to hear from you soon.
Regards,
Ram

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three required points: you say the noise began “couple off days back,” explain that it disrupts your sleep and concentration while you prepare for exams, and request that the agency contact your neighbour about lowering the volume or using headphones. The purpose is clear and the tone is generally appropriate for a formal complaint. Some details are less fully developed, however: the start date is vague, and the request could be more specific about asking the agency to remind the neighbour of quiet hours or follow up if the problem continues. The daytime qualification is understandable, but it slightly distracts from the main request. More precise details and a clearer proposed action would strengthen the letter.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall shape, moving from the reason for writing to the problem and its effects, then to a request and closing. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these stages, and links such as “Recently” and “I would appreciate” signal the progression. Some connections are awkward or mechanical, particularly “As, I am enrolled… so…” and the repeated use of “so” to join ideas. The request paragraph also combines several suggestions in one long, unclear sentence, making the agency’s requested action harder to identify. Use cleaner sentence boundaries and more direct transitions—for example, separate the request to lower the volume from the suggestion to wear headphones—to make cohesion more controlled.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the complaint, including “loud,” “video games,” “distracted,” “concentrate,” and “formal notice.” However, the range is limited and several noticeable word-choice, collocation, and spelling problems reduce naturalness: “playing games on loud noise,” “exams are overhead,” “short formal notice,” “runied,” and “appricate.” These do not prevent the reader from understanding the main message, but they make parts of the letter less clear or less appropriate in a formal context. Aim for precise phrases such as “playing video games at a high volume,” “my exams are approaching,” and “issue a formal reminder.” Proofreading spelling and choosing natural collocations would improve control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, and the main meaning is generally understandable. Some grammatical errors remain, especially in longer sentences: “As I am enrolled… so I get…” uses an awkward paired construction, while “If you could given him…” has an incorrect verb form. There are also issues with articles and verb agreement in “This started couple off days back” and “if he play games.” Sentence boundaries and punctuation are sometimes unclear, as in the long request beginning “If you could…”. These errors rarely obscure the overall message, but they limit accuracy. Practise forming conditional requests (“Could you give him…?”) and separating linked clauses into complete sentences.
