Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sie or Madam,
I am writing this letter to express my frustration towards late night roaring sound of video games being played by my neighbouring flatmate.
It was a perfect ambience for the initial two months of accomodation when suddenly high volume started to erupt till late midnight from last friday.
I work at an extremely busy hospital where the quality of my work is crucial for efficient working of my department. This limits me to have strict time frames for each activity throughout the week. Lately due to constant high volume video games being played till late night by my neighbour, I find it difficult to fall asleep. Not getting adequate sleep during the night has negatively effected my work habits.
I would request the agency to implent measures for no high volume from 10 pm till daylight in the flat and residents failing to obey the rules with strenous consequences. Your efforts will be appreciated.
Yours sincerely,
Ranbir

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three required points and maintains a clear, appropriately formal request. You identify when the noise began by contrasting the first two months with “last Friday,” explain its effect through difficulty falling asleep and negative consequences for your work, and ask the agency to introduce quiet hours and consequences for residents who break the rules. These details make the complaint relevant and purposeful. To strengthen the response further, clarify the timeline: “from last Friday” is slightly ambiguous, and the request for quiet “till daylight” could be stated more precisely. The proposed action would also be more persuasive if you asked the agency to contact the neighbour directly or enforce an existing noise policy.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The message follows a sensible progression: it introduces the complaint, gives background and its impact, then makes a request and closes politely. The contrast between the initially quiet period and the recent disturbance helps the reader follow the situation, while “Lately” signals the move to its consequences. This is a coherent overall arrangement. However, the first two body paragraphs each contain several ideas in long sentences, and the timeline is not entirely clear. The connection between your demanding work schedule and the noise could be made more direct. Use clearer sequencing, such as “The noise began last Friday” and “As a result,” and separate the background from the effects to make the progression more effortless.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a range of vocabulary to communicate the complaint and its impact, including “frustration,” “adequate sleep,” and “negatively affected my work habits.” The formal request and closing are also suitable for a letter to an agency. There are, however, several inaccurate or unnatural choices that keep the vocabulary from being consistently precise. “Roaring sound” is an unusual description of video-game noise, while “perfect ambience” and “high volume started to erupt” sound awkward in this context. Spelling errors such as “accomodation,” “implent,” and “strenous” also reduce accuracy. Prefer straightforward, natural collocations such as “loud gaming noise,” “the noise began,” and “take appropriate action.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response includes both simple and more complex sentence forms, for example the sentence beginning “I work at an extremely busy hospital” and the explanation of how poor sleep affects your work. Most of the meaning remains clear, and the letter uses a recognisable formal structure. Some grammatical errors and awkward constructions remain. “It was a perfect ambience for the initial two months of accomodation when suddenly high volume started to erupt till late midnight from last friday” is difficult to follow because the time relationship and sentence structure are unclear. “This limits me to have strict time frames” also uses an awkward grammatical pattern, and “has negatively effected my work habits” has an incorrect verb form. Aim for shorter, controlled sentences and check tense and verb patterns.
