Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I would like to draw your attention towards an issue I have been facing from past 2 weeks. I am currently living in The High Palace society in 13B apartment. I have rented that place with your agency 2 months ago.

I was enjoying my experience until now. My neighbor has also rented the flat next to me with your agency. Every night after 10 pm, he plays video games at high volume. I am a working professional and I have to go to office every morning. Moreover, I have a 2 years old kid living with me.

The loud noise from games always wakes me up at night. I find it really difficult to fall asleep with loud noises. Also, he plays shooting games and the noise of gunshots sacre my kid every night. In addition to that, hearing noises of gunshots every night is a disturbing experience especially when you are living with a kid.

I tried talking to him last week about the situation, but he did not handle the situation very well. I urge you to please file a complaint against my neighbor at the earliest. Moreover, I request your agency to please do a proper background check before renting flats to the clients.

Yours faithfully,

Tarunjeet

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three required points and maintains a clear, appropriate purpose. You identify the problem as beginning two weeks ago, explain its effects on your sleep and your child, and ask the agency to take action after your direct conversation with the neighbour was unsuccessful. These details make the complaint relevant and persuasive. The request to “file a complaint” is clear, although it would be more practical to specify a resolution, such as contacting the neighbour or enforcing quiet hours. The request for a “proper background check” is less directly connected to the current noise problem and could be replaced with a specific action. Overall, the key ideas are extended with relevant personal context, though the final request could be more focused.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The information is arranged in a sensible sequence: you introduce the issue, describe the neighbour’s behaviour and its effects, then explain what you have already tried and what you want the agency to do. Paragraphing supports this progression, and linking phrases such as “Moreover” and “In addition to that” help connect details. However, some connections feel mechanical, and the repeated emphasis on gunshots and the child makes the effects paragraph somewhat repetitive. The opening also includes several background details before moving to the central complaint. To make the progression more fluent, group the onset and noise pattern together, then present the consequences once, followed by a concise, specific request.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal complaint, including “draw your attention,” “at high volume,” “disturbing experience,” and “background check.” These choices communicate the situation clearly, and the tone is generally suitable. Some word choices and collocations are less natural, however: “attention towards an issue,” “rented the flat … with your agency,” and “handle the situation” do not express the intended meanings as precisely as they could. There is also a spelling error in “sacre,” and “games” is repeated where more specific wording could help. Aim for natural complaint-letter phrases such as “bring an issue to your attention” and “contact the tenant,” while checking spelling and avoiding repeated descriptions.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The letter includes a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, and several sentences are clear and accurate, such as “I tried talking to him last week about the situation, but he did not handle the situation very well.” The reader can follow the message throughout. Some grammatical errors remain, including “from past 2 weeks” (missing an article and a more suitable time expression), “I have rented that place with your agency 2 months ago” (tense and preposition pattern), and “a 2 years old kid” (number and compound-adjective form). The sentence beginning “I am a working professional and I have to go to office” also needs an article before “office.” Review articles, time expressions, and noun phrases to improve accuracy while retaining your sentence variety.
