Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Madam,

I rented a flat from your accommodation agency in last month. I am dealing with a serious problem from last 2 weeks that was created by my new neighbor and now i just cannot tolerated more of this.

The person rented the flat by my side of the flat and he payed the video games late at night. I don't have any issue the late night games but the noise coming from the games irritates me. It happened every night while, I was about to sleep. It starts at 10 pm to 3 am in the morning.

I have to woke up at 5 am in the morning to reached my office and I came back at 6 pm in the evening and when I was going about to sleep that loud noise of the video game inerrupt my sleep and i cannot sleep whole night. It affects my personal life as well as my professional life . I wasn't sleep well at night. As a result, I feel sleepy at work, and it affected my work performance. Also it is not good for my health.

I want you to take immediate action on this as I cannot take more stress . Make some strict rules and regulations so that everyone take care of their surrounding people also, and mentioned these things into your contract so people aware with this and make a healthy environment.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points: you say the problem began “2 weeks” ago, explain that the noise disrupts sleep and affects work and health, and ask the agency to take action. The specific hours, “10 pm to 3 am,” and your early start at work make the impact clear. This fully covers the core task and gives a clear request, while the explanation of what the agency should do is less focused: “make some strict rules” and add them to the contract are broad suggestions rather than a specific response to this neighbour. The opening also says “Dear Madam,” rather than using the requested greeting. To develop the response further, ask for a concrete step, such as contacting the neighbour and enforcing quiet hours.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a coherent overall arrangement: you introduce the problem, describe its effects, and finish with a request. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and phrases such as “As a result” and “Also” show how some ideas relate. However, progression within paragraphs is occasionally difficult to follow. For example, the second paragraph repeats the late-night timing, while the third restates that you cannot sleep before explaining the effects at work. Some links are mechanical, and the final request combines several ideas—rules, contracts, and a healthy environment—without clearly prioritising them. Use clearer sequencing and references, and make each paragraph perform one distinct purpose to improve the flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the situation and its consequences, including “irritates me,” “sleepy at work,” “work performance,” and “personal life.” These choices make the main message understandable. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “pay(ed) the video games,” “take more stress,” and “take care of their surrounding people.” Spelling errors such as “inerrupt” also reduce accuracy. The range is somewhat repetitive, particularly around “noise,” “sleep,” and “affects,” and the request uses broad phrases like “strict rules and regulations.” Aim for more precise expressions, for example “plays video games,” “causes me considerable stress,” and “be considerate of their neighbours.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, including a cause-and-effect structure in “As a result, I feel sleepy at work, and it affected my work performance.” The reader can generally understand the message, but errors occur across verb forms, sentence construction, and punctuation. Examples include “I have to woke up” and “to reached,” where the verb should remain in its base form, and “I wasn't sleep well,” which needs a different verb structure. There are also problems with articles and prepositions, as in “in last month” and “from last 2 weeks,” as well as inconsistent capitalisation of “I.” Practise accurate past and present forms and check each sentence for a complete, correctly linked structure.
