Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my concern regarding the excessive noise heard from my neighbour's flat. This problem has become increasingly disruptive and affect my daily life .As both the properties are managed by your agency, I hope you will be able to resolve this problem.

This disturbance began approximately 2 weeks ago, when their friends started coming in the night and play video games. Initially, it was was for a short- period and the noise was relatively infrequent. However, they gradually increased noise accompanied by shouting which had worsen the situation. they started playing video game beyond midnights these days.

As a result, this situation had a considerable impact on well- being and daily routine. I am unable to sleep on time and wakes-up in between the mid-nights because of the loud noise. Consequently, due to lack of sleep I am unable to concentrate on my work as well as feel tired always. Moreover, I feel exhausted because I find difficulty in relaxing in my own home.

I would appreciate if you could contact the neighbour's and request them to keep the volume at minimal or acceptable level mostly at nights. If the problem persists, I would like the agency to take an appropriate action against those tenants.

I hope you will take this matter seriously and look forward to a satisfactory resolution.

yours Faithfully,

James

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0

You cover all three requested points clearly and maintain an appropriate, formal purpose throughout. The timing is specific (“approximately 2 weeks ago”), and you explain the effects with relevant detail, including interrupted sleep, reduced concentration at work, and difficulty relaxing at home. Your request is also clear: ask the neighbours to reduce the volume and take further action if the problem continues. These ideas are well developed for the task, with only a small opportunity to be more precise about the late-night hours or the agency’s preferred next step. The letter is appropriately framed and closes with a clear expectation of resolution.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear progression: you introduce the complaint, explain when it began, describe its effects, and then state the action you want. Separate paragraphs help the reader follow these stages, and linking phrases such as “Initially,” “However,” and “As a result” make the sequence easy to understand. Some connections are less smooth where ideas are repeated or phrased awkwardly, particularly the transition from the neighbours’ increasing noise to their playing “beyond midnights.” A few punctuation and spacing issues also interrupt the flow. To strengthen the organisation further, keep each paragraph focused and use references such as “this disturbance” consistently and precisely.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a suitable range of formal complaint vocabulary, including “excessive noise,” “disruptive,” “considerable impact,” and “satisfactory resolution.” These choices communicate the seriousness of the issue and show some flexibility beyond basic wording. However, several collocations and word forms are not natural, such as “keep the volume at minimal,” “take an appropriate action,” and “playing video games” after “started.” There is also some repetition of “noise” and “problem.” This fits a response with adequate range and attempts at more formal language, while occasional word-choice inaccuracies remain. Aim for natural combinations such as “keep the volume to a minimum” and “take appropriate action.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including a time clause (“when their friends started coming in the night”) and a conditional request (“If the problem persists…”). The meaning is generally clear, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “this problem … affect” needs subject–verb agreement, while “I … wakes-up” should be “I … wake up.” Tense and verb-form control also slips in “started … and play” and “had worsen.” Sentence punctuation and capitalisation need attention, as in “they started” after a full stop. Proofreading for agreement, consistent verb forms, and sentence boundaries would improve accuracy.
