Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Gregory Estate Property Manager,

Today, I'm writing to make a formal noise complaint about my neighbour of gaming noise coming constantly after midnight. As my rental agency I would like that a permanent solution on this matter needs to be done for comfortable living.

The loud thump of Arcade gaming noise was coming from the past month from the nearby unit 1304, sharing an adjacent wall in 1303 this effect feels to be more profound. In the past the sound normally stopped before 10 pm which I made myself acceptable in behaviour. But with the time since last week it continued later in the night making me hard to sleep and waking up tired of sleeping less hours.

I would like that formal notice should be sent out as per the legal guideliness underlined in our contracts for the rental unit which both the units are abide to follow. The resident living in the 1302 will confirm my statement if there is need for the verification and more weight to my complaint.

I hope the solution can be done to this thereby making the pleasant experience on our floor.

Your Truly,

Alex

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three required points: you identify the noise as a problem, explain that it has become worse recently, describe its effect on your sleep, and request that the agency send a formal notice. The details about the adjacent unit and another neighbour who could verify the complaint make the situation relevant and specific. This is a solid response, but some points are not fully clear or developed: “from the past month” and “since last week” leave the timeline uncertain, and the requested action is limited to sending a notice rather than explaining what follow-up you expect if the noise continues. A clearer chronology and a more specific request for enforcement or follow-up would make the letter more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a recognisable overall structure: the complaint is introduced, the noise and its effects are described, and a request is made before the closing. Paragraphing helps separate these functions, and the reader can generally follow the progression. However, some links and references are unclear, particularly “this effect feels to be more profound” and “I hope the solution can be done to this.” The timeline also shifts from “the past month” to “since last week” without clearly explaining the change. Use direct transitions such as “Initially… However, since last week…” and make each paragraph’s main point explicit. The organisation is coherent overall, but cohesion is sometimes awkward rather than consistently smooth.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some task-appropriate language, including “formal noise complaint,” “adjacent wall,” “permanent solution,” and “formal notice,” which helps communicate the purpose and desired response. There is also an attempt to use more formal vocabulary. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “gaming noise,” “made myself acceptable in behaviour,” and “pleasant experience on our floor.” “Guideliness” is also misspelled, and “Arcade gaming noise” is an imprecise description. These choices sometimes make the reader work to understand your meaning. Aim for natural complaint-letter phrases, for example “loud video-game noise,” “I tolerated it,” and “a more peaceful living environment.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt a mixture of sentence forms, including longer sentences with time clauses and relative information, as in “In the past the sound normally stopped before 10 pm…” This shows some range, and the main message is usually recoverable. However, complex structures are often not controlled accurately: “I would like that a permanent solution… needs to be done” combines incompatible patterns, while “making me hard to sleep” and “waking up tired of sleeping less hours” have faulty constructions. There are also problems with articles, prepositions, and agreement in phrases such as “from the nearby unit 1304, sharing an adjacent wall in 1303.” Practise simpler, accurate request forms (“I would like the agency to…”) and check sentence boundaries and verb patterns.
