Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

Hope you are doing well. I am writing to complain about loud noise coming from nearby apartment which is intolerable. I have been noticing this issue from the day I moved to this apartment, as the family living next to my apartment play loud music during day time. They also sometimes move their furniture without any reason.

I thought It would resolve with time. But from yesterday Its been very frustrating as they have started to play loud music during nights as well. It has been affecting my concentration as well as my routine. I have missed my important meeting because of uncomfortable sleep last night.

I would be grateful if you could change my apartment as soon as possible, because it has become very difficult for me to complete my important task. It it continuous my job would be in danger. I would appreciate if you could provide a prompt resolution.

I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Lovepreet

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the noise problem, explain that it has worsened recently, describe its effect on your sleep and work, and request a change of apartment. These points make the letter relevant and give the agency a clear sense of your concern. However, the timing is not fully clear: you first say the issue began when you moved in, then say the neighbours only began making noise at night yesterday. The task specifies loud video games, but your letter describes loud music and furniture moving, so the central problem is not represented accurately. The request for a flat change is clear, though you could also ask the agency to contact the neighbour or enforce quiet hours. Clarifying the timeline and addressing the stated problem directly would make the response more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall shape: you introduce the complaint, explain its effects, make a request, and close appropriately. Paragraphing helps separate these stages, and links such as “But” and “because” show how the ideas relate. This coherent arrangement meets the task well. Some progression is less smooth because the opening says the noise has been present since you moved in, while the next paragraph presents night-time noise as a new development; a clearer distinction between daytime noise and the recent late-night gaming would resolve this. The phrase “It it continuous” also interrupts the flow, and the repeated references to “important” tasks and work could be streamlined. More precise referencing and transitions would make cohesion more flexible and natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the complaint and its consequences, including “intolerable,” “affecting my concentration,” and “prompt resolution.” These choices show some range beyond basic description. However, several expressions are imprecise or do not match the task: “loud music” replaces the specified video games, and “move their furniture without any reason” is not clearly relevant to the complaint. Phrases such as “uncomfortable sleep” and “complete my important task” are understandable but not natural collocations, while “It it continuous” makes the intended meaning difficult to identify. Aim for precise, conventional wording for noise complaints and describe the impact directly. This would improve clarity and show more controlled word choice.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and longer sentence forms, for example, “I am writing to complain…” and the sentence explaining that the noise affects your concentration and routine. The main message is generally understandable, but errors occur in verb forms, sentence construction, and punctuation. In “the family … play,” the singular subject needs a matching verb; “I thought It would resolve” has incorrect capitalisation, and “If it continuous my job would be in danger” is not grammatically complete. The opening fragment “Hope you are doing well” could be written as a full sentence, and apostrophes are missing in “Its been.” Review subject–verb agreement, conditional forms, and sentence boundaries, then proofread capitals and apostrophes. Greater accuracy across these patterns would strengthen the letter.
