Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to complain about the loud noise coming from my neighbour's flat, specially at late night. We both rent our flats throught your accodation agency.
This problem began two weeks ago and noise is very loud and disturbing. My neighbour plays video games late at night. He started playing in evening and continues play untill midnight or later that is very annoying.
As a result, I cannot sleep properly and this affects me next day. I feel tired and sleepy whole day. Moreover, I am unable to pay attention on my work and it disturb my regular routine.
I would appreciate it if you solve the problem. Please contact my neighbour and ask them to reduce the volume, specially at night. Take action if the problem continues.
I hope you will take my complain seriously and help me to live in peaceful environment.
Your faithfully,
Farhin

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three required points and maintains a clear, appropriate complaint throughout. You identify when the issue began (“two weeks ago”), explain its effects on your sleep, energy and work, and request that the agency contact the neighbour and ask for the volume to be reduced. These details make the problem understandable and the requested action relevant. To strengthen the response further, develop the request with a little more precision—for example, ask the agency to remind the neighbour of quiet hours or explain what follow-up you would expect if the noise continues. The closing also reinforces your wish for a peaceful living environment, so the purpose of the letter remains clear from beginning to end.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The information is organised in a clear sequence: you introduce the complaint, describe when and how the noise occurs, explain its effects, and then state what you want the agency to do. Paragraphing supports this progression, and linking expressions such as “As a result” and “Moreover” help show how the noise affects you. The letter is easy to follow overall. To make the connections more natural and less repetitive, vary how you link related points; for instance, the effects on sleep, energy and work could be grouped into a more smoothly connected explanation. The final request and closing could also be joined more directly, so the letter ends with a concise, well-integrated appeal.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the complaint and its consequences, including “disturbing,” “pay attention,” “reduce the volume” and “peaceful environment.” However, the range is limited and several noticeable spelling, word-form or collocation errors reduce precision: “specially” is used where “especially” is intended, “accodation” is misspelled, and “my complain” should be “my complaint.” Phrases such as “affects me next day” and “live in peaceful environment” are also not expressed naturally. These errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the main message, but they make the letter less fluent. Aim to learn accurate phrases for noise complaints and check spelling and collocations before submitting.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The letter includes mostly straightforward sentence patterns, with some attempts to connect ideas using clauses, as in “I would appreciate it if you solve the problem.” However, errors occur frequently enough to limit accuracy. Examples include “continues play” instead of “continues playing,” “it disturb” instead of “it disturbs,” and “I cannot sleep properly and this affects me next day,” which needs an article or a clearer time phrase. The conditional request would be more accurate as “I would appreciate it if you could solve the problem.” There is also a faulty closing, “Your faithfully,” where the standard form is “Yours faithfully.” Practise verb forms, subject–verb agreement, articles and polite request structures.
