Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
My name is Andrew Johnson, a current tenant at a flat number #404, and I am writing to complain you regarding the noise issues caused by an adjacent neighbour.
The noise problem caused me considerable frustration and inconvenience because it started from past two weeks, and initailly I tend to overlook it considering it as a temporary issue; however for the past week it has become huge nuisance for me. Since the neighbour plays loud video games, it is negatively effecting my daily routine.
I am full-time employee working in the early morning shifts; as a result, I follow strict sleep schedule. Although I go to bed early, I remain unable to sleep until midnight due to noise disturbance, which ultimately disturb my sleep schedule and I always get up late in the morning. Moreover, I am unable to concentrate fully on work and my work producivity is continuously impacted. The management already warned me few times and now I can not take any further risks.
Therefore, I request you to intervene into this matter and provide with your assistance in resolving this matter at the earliest. As a suggestion, I would like you to give him a formal warning followed by a legal action to stop making any noise. If the issue is not resolved this week, I may not have any other option to take a legal action against him.
I look forward to your action in resolving this matter soon.
Yours faithfully,
Andrew Johnson

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three required points and maintains a clear, appropriately formal complaint. You explain that the noise began two weeks ago and became a serious nuisance during the past week, describe its effects on sleep and work, and request intervention, including a warning to the neighbour. These details make the problem and your desired outcome clear. The impact is particularly well supported through your early shifts, difficulty sleeping, and reduced concentration. To strengthen the response further, make the requested action more measured and specific: for example, ask the agency to contact the neighbour and enforce its noise policy before mentioning legal action. The threat of legal action is clear, but it is somewhat abrupt and could be framed more diplomatically.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter has a clear progression: you introduce the complaint, explain its duration, describe its effects, and then state what you want the agency to do. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and linking expressions such as “as a result,” “Moreover,” and “Therefore” help connect the ideas. The closing is also appropriate for a formal letter. Some connections are less smooth because several points are packed into long sentences, particularly the opening of the second paragraph, where the timeline and your initial response are combined. The reference to “The management already warned me” also appears suddenly and is not clearly connected to the agency’s role. Separating these points and clarifying who issued the warning would make the progression more consistently easy to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal complaint, including “considerable frustration,” “temporary issue,” “noise disturbance,” and “intervene.” These choices communicate the seriousness of the problem, and the meaning remains clear throughout. There are, however, some inaccurate or unnatural word choices and collocations, such as “complain you regarding,” “huge nuisance,” and “intervene into this matter.” Spelling errors in “initailly,” “effecting,” and “producivity” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more natural formal phrases and check spelling carefully; for instance, “complain to you about,” “a significant nuisance,” and “intervene in this matter” would fit the context better. More precise phrasing would make the letter sound more fluent and professional.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response includes a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “because,” “although,” and “as a result.” This allows you to explain the timeline and consequences in some detail, and the main message is generally understandable. Some grammatical errors remain, however. For example, “a current tenant at a flat number #404” has an awkward article and noun phrase, while “I am full-time employee” is missing an article. In “which ultimately disturb my sleep schedule,” the verb does not agree with its subject, and “provide with your assistance” has an incomplete grammatical pattern. Review articles, subject–verb agreement, and verb complements, and break up a few long sentences to improve control.
