IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You rent a flat from an accommodation agency. Your neighbour who rents their flat from the same agency plays very loud video games late at night.
Write a letter to the accommodation agency. In your letter
explain when the problem began
describe how the noise affects you
say what you would like the agency to do
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir,
I hope this letter finds you well.
I am writing this letter to report a complaint against my neighbour "Wes", who also rents his home from your agency. The problem began a month ago, when Wes bought a new PS5. Wes plays games at very high volume until mid night or sometimes until 3 AM in the morning. He is doing this everyday from last one month.
Earlier, I discussed this issue with Wes and asked very politely to turn volume down and keep it to the acceptable limits, but unfortunately, he declined to do it in a very rude manner. Because of this high volume, I am unable to concentrate on my studies and at the same time I am not able to sleep until he's playing his games.
Hence, I am requesting you to take strict actions against Wes for this behaviour. Some other neighbours in our building are experiencing the same harassment from Wes and I believe some of them have already filed a complaint with their respective agencies.
Please look into this matter. I look forward to hearing back from you.
Thanks!
Yours faithfully,
Dhruv

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The letter addresses all three required points and maintains a clear, appropriate purpose: you explain that the noise began “a month ago,” describe its effect on your sleep and studies, and ask the agency to take action. The specific late-night times and your attempt to resolve the issue directly with Wes make the complaint credible and relevant. You also add useful context by noting that other neighbours are affected. To make the request more fully developed, specify a practical outcome, such as asking the agency to contact Wes, remind him of the building’s noise rules, or investigate the complaints. “Take strict actions” communicates urgency but leaves the agency unsure what response you expect.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The information follows a clear progression: you introduce the complaint, explain its history and effects, then state your request and close politely. Paragraphing separates these stages effectively, and links such as “Earlier,” “Because of this,” and “Hence” help show the relationships between ideas. The sequence is easy to follow throughout. Some linking is a little formulaic, however, and “Hence” sounds more like an essay connector than a natural transition in a formal letter. The final paragraph also moves quickly from your request to other neighbours’ complaints. A smoother connection, and clearer reference to whether those neighbours have contacted this agency, would make the cohesion more precise.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use an adequate range of vocabulary to explain the complaint, including “high volume,” “concentrate,” “acceptable limits,” and “harassment.” These choices make the situation clear, and the tone is generally suitable for a formal complaint. There are some imprecise or unnatural expressions: “report a complaint against” is less idiomatic than “make a complaint about,” while “take strict actions” is not a natural collocation in this context. “Mid night” is also incorrectly written as two words, and “everyday” should be “every day” when describing frequency. To show more flexible control, choose precise formal phrases such as “take appropriate action” and avoid repeating “Wes” and “games” where pronouns or alternatives would be clear.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The letter includes a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, and several sentences are clear and controlled, such as “Because of this high volume, I am unable to concentrate on my studies.” The time clause “The problem began a month ago, when Wes bought a new PS5” also shows an attempt to combine ideas effectively. Some grammatical errors remain. In “He is doing this everyday from last one month,” the tense and time expression are not formed correctly; use “He has been doing this every day for the past month.” “Until mid night or sometimes until 3 AM in the morning” is also awkwardly constructed. Review present perfect continuous for ongoing situations and use concise, accurate time phrases.
