Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I, Kisa Fatima (Flat 220) am writing this letter to complain regarding my next door neighbour, Mr. Smith (Flat 219). He has been playing video games at night on full volume from the past couple of days. It is immensely affecting me and my family.
It has been four days that he brought that game and is playing since then. He starts to play at around 9 p.m. and continues the game till 3 a.m., which is really disturbing for us as we follow a steady routine throughout the week.
My husband and I are both employed and works from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., for which we have to wake up at 7 a.m. in the morning and we usually goes to bed by 10 p.m.. The sound system and peers cheering each other during the play is really unbearable for us as it is causing a negative impact on our work performance in the organization. In addition to this, my grandmother, who lives with us, is a heart patient. The loud noise has been making her feel shaken at times which is not good for her physical and mental health.
I would like to request you to either send him a serious notice regarding this matter or arrange any other appartment for me as soon as possible. If you are unable to do any of this, I am extremely sorry to inform you that I would leave this accommodation at my earliest.
I am looking forward to your prompt reponse.
Yours faithfully,
Kisa.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0
The letter covers all three required points clearly and maintains an appropriate complaint throughout. You identify when the problem began (“four days” ago), explain its effects on your work routine and your grandmother’s wellbeing, and make specific requests for the agency to issue a notice or arrange alternative accommodation. These details develop the impact of the noise well and make the urgency understandable. The request to move is a strong additional option, although the final ultimatum about leaving could be framed more diplomatically to keep the focus on resolving the complaint. Overall, the purpose and requested action are clear, with only a small opportunity to refine the tone.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The information is organised in a clear progression: the opening identifies the complaint, the next paragraphs establish its duration and effects, and the final paragraph states what you want the agency to do. Paragraphing helps distinguish these functions, and linking phrases such as “In addition to this” make the added concern about your grandmother easy to follow. Some connections are less smooth: the first paragraph already mentions the impact, then the following paragraphs repeat and expand it, while “for which” in the work-routine sentence makes the relationship between employment and waking time slightly awkward. A more direct sequence and a few clearer references would make the cohesion feel more flexible and less repetitive.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use an adequate range for a formal complaint, including “immensely affecting,” “steady routine,” “work performance,” and “prompt response.” These choices communicate the seriousness of the situation, and the reader can understand the message throughout. Some less common expressions are not fully natural or precise: “playing video games … on full volume” would be more idiomatic as “playing video games at full volume,” and “peers cheering each other during the play” is an awkward description. There are also spelling errors in “appartment” and “reponse.” More accurate collocations and careful proofreading would help you show greater flexibility and control while retaining your clear, relevant vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The letter includes both simple statements and longer complex sentences, for example the sentence about your grandmother, which adds detail through a relative clause. Meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors recur. In “My husband and I are both employed and works,” the verb should agree with the plural subject; “we usually goes” also needs a plural verb. The phrase “It has been four days that he brought that game” has an awkward tense construction, and “we have to wake up … and we usually goes” combines forms inconsistently. There are also punctuation slips, such as the doubled full stop after “10 p.m.” Review subject–verb agreement, tense patterns, and sentence punctuation to make the varied structures more accurate.
