Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear sir or madam,
I am writing to complain about my neighbour who are playing video games at a very high volume every night.I have noticed this thing from day one when we newly moved into this house , on that time they were played games at large volume on weekends, but I ignored it.
My wife and I are both working, and we have early morning shifts every day. High volume disturbs us as well as our children because on of our kid have exmas, and the other one is just 6 months old. Because of high volume he woke up and crying ,also high noise is disturbing other kid's study.
I request you on behalf of my family , please you can give notice to our neighbours regarding this , and ask them don,t play games at high volumes at night , otherwise if this continues like that then i wish to change my house.
i look forword to you to reply.
Yours faithfully,
abc

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three requested points: you explain that the noise began when you moved in, describe its effects on your family, and ask the agency to contact the neighbour. The details about your early shifts, your baby waking, and your older child’s studies make the complaint relevant and personal. The request is also clear, although the proposed action could be more fully specified—for example, asking the agency to remind the neighbour of quiet hours and follow up if the noise continues. The timeline is slightly unclear because you say the games were initially loud on weekends, but now occur every night. Clarifying when the pattern changed would make the account more complete and precise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a recognisable structure: the opening states the purpose, the next paragraph explains the impact, and the final paragraph makes a request and closes politely. This gives the reader a coherent overall progression. Some links between ideas are less smooth, however. In the first paragraph, the shift from “every night” to “on weekends” is not clearly explained, and the long sentence beginning “Because of high volume” combines several effects without clear separation. The final request also moves quickly from asking for a notice to threatening to change flats. Use clearer sentence boundaries and connect each consequence to the relevant detail so the organisation feels more controlled and less abrupt.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
Your vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the complaint, with relevant expressions such as “very high volume,” “early morning shifts,” and “disturbing other kid’s study.” However, the range is limited and several word choices or forms are inaccurate or unnatural, which makes parts of the letter less clear. For example, “this thing” is vague, “large volume” is an awkward collocation, and “on of our kid” appears to mean “one of our children.” Spelling errors such as “exmas” and “look forword” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise, natural phrases for noise and its effects, and proofread spelling and possessives. This would make the message more fluent and professional.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and longer sentence forms, including explanations with “because” and a conditional request: “if this continues like that then I wish to change my house.” However, errors in agreement, tense, articles, and sentence construction are frequent enough to affect clarity. For example, “my neighbour who are playing” has a subject–verb agreement problem, while “they were played games” uses an incorrect verb form. In “one of our kid have,” the noun and verb forms do not agree, and the sentence beginning “Because of high volume” is not smoothly connected to the preceding idea. Use shorter, complete sentences where needed, and check agreement and verb forms when describing past and current events.
