Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to complaint you about the noise issue I am facing with the neigbour from last one month.
My name is Pranusha, and I stay at 605 unit, 350 Lynnwood drive, in Oakville. Issue was started in september month when new tenants moved into 604 unit. There children bedroom and our master bedroom is side by side may be there kids are playing the video games at late night.
My husband is preparing for CPA exam, which is due in next two months. He normaly prepare for the exam on weekends till late night, with the noise it became very tough for him to focus on study. Normally, we are suffering with the sound close to 2 PM on weekends and it became very difficult for me go to sleep.
Recently, I met the neighbour in lobby and during our conversation I informed her about the issue we are facing but she not taken it seriously, I would appreciate it if you send them a warning note saying no noise after 11PM.
Appreciate your attention and prompt response to this matter.
Your's faithfully,
Pranusha

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three required points and maintains a clear, appropriate purpose: you explain that the problem began when new tenants moved into the neighbouring unit, describe its effect on your husband’s exam preparation and your sleep, and request that the agency send a warning about noise after 11 p.m. The details about the bedrooms being adjacent and your conversation with the neighbour help support the complaint. To make the response more fully developed, clarify the timeline and frequency: “from last one month” and “close to 2 PM on weekends” leave the duration and timing somewhat uncertain. You could also specify what follow-up you expect if the warning does not resolve the problem. Overall, the request is clear and relevant throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The information follows a sensible sequence: you introduce the complaint, explain its cause, describe its effects, and then state the action you want. Separate paragraphs help distinguish these stages, and the closing is suitable for a formal letter. This gives the response a coherent overall arrangement. Some links between ideas are less smooth, however. For example, “Issue was started in september month when new tenants moved into 604 unit” combines the start of the problem and the tenants’ arrival awkwardly, while the shift from your husband’s study to your own sleep could be signposted more clearly. The final request is also joined to the account of your conversation in a long sentence. Use clearer sentence boundaries and transitions to make the progression more polished.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for a housing complaint, including “noise issue,” “late night,” “warning note,” and “prompt response,” so the reader can understand the situation and your request. There is some useful specificity in references to the “master bedroom,” “CPA exam,” and “lobby.” However, the range and control of word choice are limited in places, and several expressions are unnatural or imprecise: “complaint you about,” “suffering with the sound,” and “warning note” do not sound idiomatic in this context. Spelling errors such as “neigbour” and “normaly” also reduce accuracy. Aim for natural collocations such as “complain to you about,” “disturbed by the noise,” and “formal warning,” and check spelling carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The letter includes both simple sentences and attempts at more complex structures, such as “My husband is preparing for CPA exam, which is due in next two months” and the sentence explaining how the noise affects his study. Meaning is generally recoverable, but errors occur across verb forms, articles, agreement, and sentence construction. Examples include “Issue was started,” “There children bedroom,” and “she not taken it seriously.” The long sentence beginning “Recently, I met the neighbour” also needs clearer punctuation or separation into two sentences. These errors make some parts less fluent and can briefly slow the reader, despite the clear overall message. Practise accurate past-tense reporting and article use, and build complex sentences from correctly formed clauses.
