Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this email to express my concern about the issue I am facing in my flat by the neighbour in the same building.

The problem started on last monday, when the sound of loud video games at late night disturbed people of the building. Additionally, the music system played with high volume create distrubance for sleep.

I always sleep early in the evening, so I can get up early in the morning easily. But, the problem I am facing is not allowing me to do this anymore. Also, it disturbs me to do some study at night after my work hours.

The request to the agency to proceed some serious action to this problem as soon as possible. I would really appreciate if the authority provides some rules and regulations notice to the neighbour, who are disturbing the people in the society to resolve this problem in the future.

I hope you will get back to me with accurate solution. I look forward to hearing from you.

Your Sincerely,

Smith

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three requested points: you identify when the disturbance began, explain its effects on sleep and studying, and ask the agency to intervene. The impact is especially clear in “not allowing me to do this anymore” and the reference to studying after work. The request for “some rules and regulations notice” also gives the agency a practical action to consider. However, the start date is vague (“last monday”), and the account shifts from one neighbour to “people of the building” and “the people in the society,” so the scale of the problem is unclear. To strengthen the letter, give a more precise time pattern and focus on how the noise affects you personally, while specifying the action you want, such as contacting the neighbour or enforcing quiet hours.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall sequence: you introduce the complaint, describe the noise, explain its effects, and make a request before closing. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and linking expressions such as “Additionally,” “But,” and “Also” make the relationships between ideas visible. Some connections are less smooth, however. “Additionally” introduces music without clarifying whether it is part of the same disturbance, while “But” begins a contrast that is not fully developed. The request paragraph also combines the action you want with a broad statement about future rules. For stronger progression, connect each paragraph more directly to the next and use clear references to the neighbour and the noise rather than shifting between “my neighbour,” “people,” and “the authority.”

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the complaint, including “loud video games,” “high volume,” “disturbed,” and “rules and regulations.” There are also attempts at more formal wording, such as “express my concern” and “I would really appreciate.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, including “proceed some serious action,” “accurate solution,” and “music system played with high volume.” Spelling errors such as “monday” and “distrubance” also reduce accuracy. These choices do not prevent the reader from understanding the main issue, but they make the letter less natural and precise. Prefer established phrases such as “take action,” “provide a suitable solution,” and “the music was played at a high volume.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex sentences, for example, “I always sleep early in the evening, so I can get up early in the morning easily” and the sentence beginning “when the sound of loud video games…”. The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect clarity and naturalness. In “The problem started on last monday,” the preposition is unnecessary; “the music system played with high volume create” has a subject–verb agreement problem and an unclear tense; and “The request to the agency to proceed…” is not a complete, well-formed sentence. The closing “Your Sincerely” also has a punctuation and capitalization issue. Build accuracy by checking sentence completeness, agreement, and verb forms, while retaining your attempts to link ideas in longer sentences.
