Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to bring your attention to the noise creating issue. My name is John and I am residing in the flat number 102, block B. I have a complaint against my neighbour, who is living next to my flat and his flat number is 103.

The problem has been started for one week, from when his cousin shifted with him. The loud noise usually comes during midnight when my wife and I are in the deep sleep. It seems like they use to play video games at mid night and shout loud when somebody wins the match.

Due to noise, our sleep cycle gets disturb which further affect my personal and proffesional life. Because of incomplete sleep not only my health detoriates but it also affect my work life; few days ago I missed this opportunity because of the given reason.

I request to approach him and explain all the problems facing by me and other society members and give him written notice to stop creating noise at midnight and warn him about if he is going to repeat this then he has to leave the flat.

I hope you understand the situation and immediately send him notice.

Looking forward hearing from you back.

Thank you,

Yours sincerely,

John Mathew

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three required points and maintains a clear, appropriate complaint throughout. You identify when the issue began (“for one week, from when his cousin shifted with him”), explain its effects on your sleep, health and work, and ask the agency to intervene with the neighbour. The example of missing an opportunity helps show a practical consequence. The request for a written warning is also specific. To make the response more fully developed, clarify what action you expect the agency to take and give it a reasonable timeframe; the demand that the neighbour “has to leave the flat” may seem disproportionate without further explanation. Overall, the purpose and requested outcome are clear, though some details could be more carefully supported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall progression: you introduce the complaint, describe its timing, explain its effects, and then state what you want the agency to do. Separate paragraphs help the reader follow these stages, and links such as “Due to noise” and “Because of incomplete sleep” make the cause-and-effect relationship clear. This meets the lower-band expectation of a coherent arrangement and shows some effective progression. However, a few connections are awkward or repetitive, particularly the repeated explanation of sleep-related consequences in the third paragraph. The final request also combines several actions in one long sentence, making the sequence less easy to follow. Use shorter sentences to separate the request to contact the neighbour from the proposed warning and follow-up.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the complaint, including “loud noise,” “video games,” “written notice,” and “professional life.” However, the range is limited and several noticeable word-choice, collocation, and spelling problems make the letter less natural. For example, “noise creating issue” is an awkward phrase, “deep sleep” is less suitable than a natural expression such as “sound asleep,” and “our sleep cycle gets disturb” contains an incorrect word form. There are also spelling errors in “proffesional” and “detoriates.” These do not prevent the reader from understanding the main message, but they show that vocabulary control is not yet consistent. Focus on accurate, natural phrases for describing noise and its effects.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response attempts a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including a cause-and-effect construction with “Because of incomplete sleep” and a relative clause describing the neighbour. However, errors occur across verb forms, agreement, and sentence construction. Examples include “The problem has been started” instead of a suitable active or passive form, “our sleep cycle gets disturb,” and “which further affect my personal and professional life.” The long request beginning “I request to approach him” is also grammatically difficult to follow, and “Looking forward hearing” is missing a required preposition. These errors sometimes make the reader pause, although the overall meaning remains understandable. Practise accurate verb patterns and agreement, and divide complex requests into shorter sentences.
