Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir,
I am writing this letter,to bring to your notice a concern that is causing lot of problems for me and my family. Recently, a new neighbour moved next to our flat, that is flat no 2B at Belleview Apartments.
After enquiring with our neighbour, they are also renting flat from you guys.
Two weeks ago, they bought a new playstation for their kids and they are being very loud at night.I have a toddler and he wakes up crying because of the loud screams. I have to spend few hours to calm my kid and it has interrupted my sleep schedule.I tried reaching out to my neighbour multiple times and explain them about my concern and how it is impacting my day to day life.Unfortunately, there was no improvement and still we are experncing the same issue every night.
I would like to formally file a complaint with the agency and request you to take a necessary action, so that moving forward this will not repeat.
Looking forward for a prompt action.
Thank you,
Yours faithfully,
Sadaf.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The letter addresses all three required points: you identify the problem as beginning two weeks ago, explain that your toddler wakes crying and that your sleep is disrupted, and ask the agency to take action. The impact is particularly clear and relevant. You also mention that you have already approached the neighbour, which helps explain why you are contacting the agency. Some details could be developed more fully to make the request precise: for example, specify that the noise occurs late at night and ask the agency to contact the neighbour or enforce quiet hours. The opening and closing are appropriate for a formal complaint, although the salutation should follow the task’s requested wording.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The information is arranged in a generally understandable order: you introduce the neighbour, explain when the noise began, describe its effects, and then make your request. Paragraph breaks help separate the introduction from the main complaint. However, the progression is not always smooth. The short sentence “After enquiring with our neighbour, they are also renting flat from you guys” interrupts the account, and the transition from the neighbour’s purchase to the effect on your family could be clearer. Some linking is repetitive, particularly the repeated use of “and.” Grouping the timeline and previous attempts to resolve the issue into a more clearly connected paragraph would make the letter easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the complaint and its effects, including “formally file a complaint,” “interrupted my sleep schedule,” and “prompt action.” These phrases show an attempt to use language suited to a formal letter. However, several choices are informal or imprecise for writing to an agency, such as “you guys,” “bought a new playstation,” and “take a necessary action.” There are also spelling and word-form errors, including “experncing,” which reduce accuracy. Aim for more precise collocations and a consistently formal register; for instance, describe the noise as “loud gaming” or “excessive noise” and request that the agency “take appropriate action.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The letter includes both simple sentences and attempts at more complex structures, such as “I have a toddler and he wakes up crying because of the loud screams.” The main message remains clear, but some grammatical and punctuation errors are noticeable. Examples include “causing lot of problems,” which needs an article, and “they are also renting flat from you guys,” which needs an article and a clearer sentence structure. In “I tried reaching out … and explain them,” the verb forms and construction are not parallel; use “tried to reach out … and explain my concern to them.” Commas are also misplaced or missing, especially after introductory phrases. More careful editing of articles, verb patterns, and punctuation would improve control.
