Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to inform you regarding the issue am facing of loud video games being played late at night, since last two weeks. I have rented an apartment at Pramukh residency S2- 703 through your agency last month.

I strongly believe everyone has their own way to relax and enjoy their time. However, since last two weeks there has been a lot of noise post 10 pm. This noise makes it difficult for me to sleep on time, as I have to get up early every day for my work. I am not able to get a sound sleep this has affected my productivity at work, and I feel lethargic the whole day. This has not only affected my profession but also have deteriorated my quality of sleep.

I request you to take this matter seriously and ask them to limit the time. I really understand such leisure activity is essential for people to relax post a tiring day. However, it would be great if they can use a handphone if they want to play post 10 pm.

Thank you for your time and looking forward for your response.

Your sincerely

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three points: it identifies the problem as loud gaming after 10 p.m., explains the effect on your sleep and work, and asks the agency to intervene by limiting the neighbour’s playing time. The impact is supported with relevant details, including having to get up early and feeling lethargic during the day. Your request is understandable and appropriately considerate of the neighbour’s leisure. To make the response more fully developed, specify when the noise first began more precisely and ask for a concrete agency action, such as contacting the neighbour or reminding them of quiet hours. The suggestion to use a handphone is clear, but the agency’s role could be stated more directly.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: the opening introduces the complaint, the next paragraph describes its effects, and the final paragraph makes a request. This progression helps the reader follow your purpose, and linking expressions such as “However” and “not only…but also” connect related ideas. Some connections are less smooth, however. The opening sentence combines the purpose, the issue, and its duration in a crowded structure, while the sleep and work effects are repeated in closely related terms. The final paragraph also shifts from asking the agency to act to suggesting a phone without clearly linking that suggestion to the requested intervention. Use more precise transitions and avoid repeating the same consequence.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal complaint, including “productivity,” “leisure activity,” and “deteriorated,” and the meaning remains clear throughout. There are also attempts to express the problem and its consequences in varied ways. Some choices are unnatural or imprecise, such as “inform you regarding the issue am facing,” “sound sleep,” and “use a handphone,” which reduce the naturalness of the letter. “Deteriorated my quality of sleep” is also an awkward collocation. Aim for conventional complaint-letter phrasing and more natural combinations, such as “report a problem,” “get a good night’s sleep,” and “use headphones.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response includes both simple sentences and more complex forms, for example the sentence beginning “However, since last two weeks…” and the clause “as I have to get up early every day.” Most of the message is understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. In the opening, “the issue am facing” is missing the subject “I,” and “since last two weeks” needs an article and a more suitable time expression. The sentence “I am not able to get a sound sleep this has affected my productivity” joins two independent clauses without appropriate punctuation. There is also an agreement error in “not only affected my profession but also have deteriorated.” Check sentence boundaries, verb agreement, and article use when editing.
