Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to lay a complain about the disburbance from my neigbour.
It all started last month after my neigbour moved into the apartment next to my own flat. At first, it was just a small noise that stops after some hours and it was just occasionally but after some days, I noticed that the noise became more loud and consistent.
I found out that he plays video games at night with the volume tuned to the highest. Since my bedroom was close to his sitting room, i could not fall asleep and even if i manage to sleep, I will jolt awake from the noise. This is affecting my work output since I do not get enough sleep at night, I become unproductive by the day. As most of my time will be spent trying to catch up on sleep.
I will appreciate it if you can address this situation by either calling him to order or maybe find a way of reducing the noise. You can tell him to install noise cancellation wall which will prevent me from hearing him when he is playing his games at night. Thank you.
I look forward to a favourable response.
Yours faithfully,
Ikechukwu Gift

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The letter addresses all three required points and maintains a clear, appropriate purpose. You explain that the problem began after the neighbour moved in last month, describe the effect on your sleep and work, and request that the agency intervene. The details about waking suddenly and becoming unproductive help extend the impact rather than merely stating that the noise is annoying. Your proposed actions—contacting the neighbour and reducing sound transmission—are relevant, although the request could be more specific about the agency’s next steps, such as investigating the noise or reminding the tenant of quiet hours. Overall, the response is complete and supported, with a little room to make the requested remedy more precise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter follows a clear progression: you introduce the complaint, explain when it began, describe its effects, and then state what you want the agency to do. Separate paragraphs make these stages easy to identify, and phrases such as “At first,” “Since,” and “I look forward to” help guide the reader. Some connections are less smooth, however. The sentence beginning “As most of my time…” is a fragment and repeats the point about reduced productivity rather than linking it cleanly to the previous sentence. The long sentence about the noise becoming louder also contains several ideas joined together. Smoother sentence boundaries and less repetition would make the progression more consistently polished.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the complaint and its consequences, including “disturbance,” “consistent,” “unproductive,” and “favourable response.” However, several noticeable spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision: “lay a complain” should be “lodge a complaint,” while “more loud” is not the natural comparative form. “Noise cancellation wall” is also an unclear description of the soundproofing you mean. Some wording is repetitive, particularly “noise” and “sleep,” and “calling him to order” may sound less natural in a formal letter. More accurate collocations and a few precise terms for late-night noise and sound insulation would strengthen the vocabulary while keeping the tone professional.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
There is a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, and the meaning remains clear throughout. For example, the sentence beginning “Since my bedroom was close to his sitting room” gives a clear cause for the sleep problem. Some grammatical errors remain: “a small noise that stops” shifts tense within a past account, and “even if I manage to sleep, I will jolt awake” does not maintain the past-time framing. The sentence beginning “As most of my time…” is incomplete because it lacks an independent clause. Capitalisation is also inconsistent in “i could not.” Review tense consistency, sentence completeness, and punctuation around longer sentences; these corrections would improve accuracy without requiring more complicated structures.
