Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to complain about my neighbour who also rents a flat from your agency at Wallford Street, Sunrise Building. His name is Alex and he resides in a 2-bedroom flat, next to mine.

Initially, he was living here alone but since last month, his friend Bill has joined him. Every night, after dinner, they play video games with a very loud sound usually played on his music system.

As you know, I am a student along with a part-time job, and after dinner I spend my time studying or completing my assignments. That is the only time when I manage to study because of my busy schedule, but this loud noise really affects my attention span and disturbs my learning.

I would request you to please address this matter with Alex, and give him a warning for playing loud music. If this doesn't help, I hope you would take strict action against this.

I will be looking forward to your response. Thank you for your consideration.

Yours faithfully,

Alvina

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three required points and maintains a clear, appropriate purpose: you identify the neighbour, explain that the disturbance began after his friend moved in last month, describe its effect on your studies, and request agency intervention. The impact is made specific by explaining that evenings are your only study time and that the noise affects your concentration. Your request for a warning, followed by stricter action if needed, is also clear. To make the response more fully developed, specify the late-night timing more precisely, since the task highlights noise late at night but you only say “every night, after dinner.” You could also ask the agency to remind the tenant of quiet-hour rules or contact you after investigating.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The information is arranged in a sensible sequence: the complaint and neighbour’s details come first, followed by the cause and timing, the effect on you, and your requested action. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and phrases such as “Initially,” “That is the only time,” and “If this doesn’t help” guide the reader through the explanation. Some connections are a little mechanical or unclear, however. “As you know” assumes the agency already knows about your schedule, while “That is the only time” refers back to the study period in a slightly repetitive way. The opening paragraph also includes several details that do not advance the complaint. A more concise opening and smoother links between the cause and its impact would make the progression more polished.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal complaint, including “complain,” “disturbs my learning,” “address this matter,” and “take strict action.” These choices communicate the issue and your request clearly. There are some imprecise or unnatural collocations, though: “a very loud sound usually played on his music system” is awkward and does not clearly describe video-game noise, while “affects my attention span” is less natural here than language about concentration. “He resides in a 2-bedroom flat” is also unnecessarily formal for this context. More precise phrases for the noise, its timing, and its effect would improve flexibility and naturalness while preserving the clear meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The letter includes a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, and most of the meaning remains clear. For example, the sentence beginning “That is the only time when I manage to study” combines a relative clause with an explanation, and “If this doesn’t help, I hope you would take strict action” uses a conditional structure. Some grammatical and punctuation issues remain. In “I am a student along with a part-time job,” the relationship between the two ideas is not expressed correctly; a clearer construction would be “I am a student and also have a part-time job.” The sentence beginning “Every night” is also awkwardly structured, and “I will be looking forward to your response” would be more accurate as “I look forward to your response.” Greater control of these patterns would strengthen accuracy.
