Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir,
I rent a flat from your accommodation agency. However, I want to complain about my neighbour who plays loud noise while playing video games late at night.
First of all, when I reached here, 1 week was very well and peaceful but after that the problem arises due to my neighbour. At night, my neighbour and his friends plays very loud video games while shouting and laughing. Moreover, this thing is happen from last 2 weeks and I went to his house to tell them about the issue, however, they do not listen and continue to behave in such a reckless manner.
In addition, the noise affects my sleep schedule as I am not able to sleep early at night. Consequently, I am unable to wake up early in the morning. Furthermore, I am not able to study properly because of loud noises.
I want you to take a strict actions against my neighbour. I would like the agency to make some rules such as do not plays loud noises after 10 pm or if someone break the rule, they should give monetary penality.
I am hoping to get a positive response from you soon.
Yours faithfully,
Tasbiyah

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three required points and maintains a clear, appropriate complaint throughout. You explain that the problem began after your first peaceful week and has continued for two weeks, describe its effects on sleep, waking early, and studying, and request agency action through a quiet-hours rule and a penalty for breaches. These details make the response relevant and sufficiently developed. The request for “strict actions” is somewhat general, but you follow it with practical examples, so the agency can understand what you want. To strengthen the letter further, make the timeline more precise and state explicitly what response or intervention you expect, such as contacting the neighbour and enforcing the building’s noise policy.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall progression: you introduce the complaint, explain its history, describe its effects, and then make a request. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and linking expressions such as “First of all,” “Moreover,” and “Consequently” help connect points. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some flexibility in linking ideas. However, several transitions are mechanical or repetitive, and “Moreover” introduces information that could be integrated more smoothly into the timeline. The opening “Dear Sir” also does not follow the requested salutation, “Dear Sir or Madam,” and the closing is separated from the request without a particularly polished transition. Use fewer formulaic connectors and make the relationship between events clearer.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the complaint and its consequences, including “sleep schedule,” “reckless manner,” and “monetary penalty.” The topic is consistently clear, and some choices show an attempt to use more formal language. However, the range is limited and several noticeable word-choice or collocation errors make the letter sound unnatural: “plays loud noise,” “take a strict actions,” and “monetary penality.” “Positive response” is also vague in this context. These issues do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and naturalness. Build a set of accurate phrases for noise complaints, such as “excessive noise,” “take appropriate action,” and “impose a fine,” and check spelling and word forms before submitting.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a sentence with “because” and another using “however,” so there is some variety in structure. The main message remains understandable. However, errors occur across verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction, and they sometimes make the reader pause. For example, “my neighbour and his friends plays” should use a plural verb, while “this thing is happen” needs a correct tense form. “When I reached here, 1 week was very well” is also difficult to interpret grammatically. Practise accurate past and present forms and subject–verb agreement, and revise each sentence to ensure its clauses fit together. Greater control of these patterns would make your ideas clearer.
