Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I am your recent tenant in North york apartment building. The house is in very quite and fablous neighborhood but from last one week newly accomodated next door flatmate is playing loud music video games overnight.

I shifted to this place because of quite surroundings that certainly help me out to concentrate more on my future goals that is preparing for my MBBS exams conducting this fall season. To my dismay, this regular nightly noise pollution is affecting my overall studies and I am also not able to sleep calmly. Hence, causing more distress and stress.

I would like your agency should take this complaint on priority and sent a warning message stated to lower the video games voice or completely not to play at night time as this is causing distrubance is neighborhood.

Hope you take a prompt action and resolve the problem sooner.

Yours sincerely,

Rahul Kumar

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three required points: it says the noise began “from last one week,” explains that it disrupts your exam preparation and sleep, and asks the agency to intervene. The purpose is clear and the request for a warning or reduced nighttime noise is relevant. The details about preparing for MBBS exams help explain why the disturbance matters, while the opening and closing make this recognisable as a formal complaint. To strengthen the response further, make the requested action more specific and measured—for example, ask the agency to contact the neighbour and remind them of quiet hours, then follow up if the problem continues. This would develop the proposed solution more fully and avoid the unclear suggestion that gaming should be stopped completely at night.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The information follows a clear progression: you introduce the neighbour’s behaviour, explain its effects, and then state what you want the agency to do. Paragraphing separates the background and impact from the request, and linking expressions such as “To my dismay,” “Hence,” and “Hope” help signal the movement between ideas. The reader can follow the complaint throughout. Some connections are less smooth, however: “Hence, causing more distress and stress” is a fragment, and the final request combines several ideas in one long sentence. Use complete sentences and make the sequence of requested actions clearer. A more conventional formal closing transition would also make the ending feel more polished.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use vocabulary relevant to the situation, including “nightly noise,” “distress,” “concentrate,” and “prompt action,” so the main message is understandable. There are also attempts to express the impact precisely, particularly the effect on studying and sleep. However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable and sometimes make the phrasing awkward: “quite” is used where “quiet” is intended, “fablous” is misspelled, and “newly accomodated” is not a natural way to describe a neighbour who has recently moved in. Phrases such as “video games voice” and “stated to lower” are also imprecise. Build accuracy with common complaint-letter collocations, such as “volume of the games,” “recently moved in,” and “reduce the noise.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response attempts both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the explanation beginning “I shifted to this place because…” and the sentence describing the effect on your studies and sleep. The overall meaning remains clear, but several grammatical problems make the writing less controlled. For example, “I would like your agency should take” combines two incompatible patterns; write “I would like your agency to take” or “I hope your agency will take.” “Hence, causing…” is not a complete sentence, and “is affecting” does not fit smoothly with the surrounding phrasing. There are also issues with articles and sentence construction in “in North york apartment building.” Practise complete clauses and consistent verb patterns, especially when making requests.
