Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my concern regarding the very lound video game's music from my neighbour who rents his flat from your agency like I did.

For first two weeks, it was not a problem, but I have noticed from the last week that he invited his friends late nights and they are doing party every night and make loud noise while playing games.

Currently, I am preparing for my exam. Due to work schedule, I am not able to manage my time to study in day time. Therefore, I prefer to study in night but study is affecting too much negatively due to nuisance from my neighbour and I am not able to concerntrate on my studies.

It would be appreciated, if you take some actions on this matter or give a legal notice to the neighbour. I hope you would solve this problem as soon as possible.

Kind regards,

James

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three requested points and maintain a clear, appropriately formal purpose. You explain that the disturbance began after the first two weeks, describe its effect on your exam preparation and concentration, and ask the agency to take action, including issuing a notice. These details make the complaint relevant and give the reader a clear understanding of your request. To strengthen the letter further, make the timeline more precise: “from the last week” does not clearly indicate when the noise started, and the task specifically concerns loud gaming late at night, whereas the account of parties and friends slightly shifts the focus. State exactly when the gaming noise began and what practical action you expect the agency to take.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall progression: you introduce the complaint, explain when it arose, describe its impact, and finish with a request. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and phrases such as “Currently” and “Therefore” help connect the circumstances to their consequences. This meets the lower-band expectation of a coherent arrangement and shows some control of progression. However, a few links are awkward or unclear, particularly the movement from the neighbour inviting friends to “doing party every night,” and the repeated use of “study” in the impact paragraph. Use clearer transitions to distinguish the noise’s timing from its effect, and make the final request a separate, specific action so the letter’s progression feels more controlled.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the complaint, including “concern,” “late nights,” “nuisance,” and “legal notice.” However, the range is limited and several noticeable spelling, word-form, or collocation problems reduce naturalness: “lound,” “video game's music,” “doing party,” and “concerntrate.” Some phrases also sound imprecise, such as “take some actions” and “study is affecting too much negatively.” These errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the main message, but they make the letter less fluent and professional. Build a more accurate set of complaint-related expressions and check spelling and collocations carefully, especially in the key description of the noise and its impact.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple and complex sentences, including a conditional-style explanation of your study schedule and a sentence beginning “Due to work schedule.” The main message remains understandable, but grammatical control is uneven, and several sentence patterns are faulty. For example, “For first two weeks” needs an article, “he invited his friends … and they are doing party” shifts tense and has an incorrect construction, and “It would be appreciated, if you take” has an unnecessary comma and an awkward clause pattern. The response also relies heavily on basic sentence structures. Practise accurate articles, consistent past and present tenses, and polite request forms; then proofread punctuation and sentence boundaries.
