Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
As a resident of South Avenue in Sudbury, I am writing to bring to your attention a matter regarding a noise disturbance from my neighboor who have rented their flat from your agency.
To provide some specific context, last week my neighbour brought a video game set. However, not only have their children started playing it on high volume, but they also have started playing during night time.
Regarding the noise disturbance, since I have university exams next week, it distracts me from focusing on my studies. Also, my sleep cycle affected for last 6 days due to constant sound of bullets and firing that comes from video games.
In light of these circumstances, I would be incredibly grateful if you could give them a warning related to late night noise occurrence from their video game.
I hope you will consider my request favorably, and I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully,
Anshu Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three required points and maintains a clear, appropriately formal purpose. You identify when the issue began (“last week”), explain its effects on your studies and sleep, and make a specific request for the agency to warn the neighbour. These details make the complaint relevant and supported. To strengthen the response further, develop the timeline and requested action a little more precisely: for example, state what time the gaming usually continues until, and ask the agency to remind the neighbour of quiet-hour rules or follow up if the disturbance continues. The current request is clear, though the impact and proposed resolution could be extended slightly.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter is organised in a clear sequence: you introduce the complaint, give background, describe its effects, and then request action. Paragraphing supports this progression, and phrases such as “Regarding the noise disturbance” and “In light of these circumstances” help signal the purpose of each section. The closing is also appropriate for a formal letter. Some linking is slightly formulaic, however, and the opening sentence is dense, combining your residence, the neighbour, and the agency relationship at once. A more direct opening followed by a separate sentence about the neighbour would make the progression even smoother. Overall, the reader can follow the complaint and its development without difficulty.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a suitable range of formal complaint vocabulary, including “bring to your attention,” “noise disturbance,” and “incredibly grateful.” These choices establish the right tone, and the description of “bullets and firing” conveys the nature of the game sounds. Some expressions are less natural or precise: “video game set” would usually be “gaming console,” “during night time” is awkward, and “noise occurrence” is not a natural collocation in this context. There is also a spelling error in “neighboor.” These slips do not prevent understanding, but more accurate collocations and spelling would make the vocabulary more flexible and polished.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The letter includes both straightforward sentences and more complex forms, such as “not only … but they also …” and the conditional request beginning “I would be incredibly grateful if…”. Meaning remains clear throughout. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly in agreement and verb forms: “my neighbour who have rented” should be “my neighbour who has rented,” and “my sleep cycle affected” needs a verb, such as “my sleep cycle has been affected.” The phrase “since I have university exams next week” is understandable but would be more naturally structured as “as I have university exams next week.” Review subject–verb agreement and ensure each clause has a complete verb; this would improve accuracy while preserving your range of sentence structures.
