Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my concerns regarding the excessive noise coming from playing video games late at night.

The problem begin approximately two weeks ago , when young boys moved next to my place. They played video games late at night at a very loud volume.

I have my exams in the upcoming week for that i have to study hard. But it affects my concentration, as it is very difficult to focus on studies. Along with that , I barely sleep at night which makes me lazy and prevents me from become active and focused. This is not enough, My grandfather is living with me who has heart problem . he can not bear such kind of noise which is very dangerous for him.

I want you to take immediate action the high volume that effects me by imposing strict rules like you should ban the high volume after 10 p.m . or fined them if someone not followed the rules.

I will be thankful to you for taking actions as soon as possible.

Your faithfully,

Jaspreet kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three required points and maintains a clear, appropriate purpose. You identify when the issue began (“approximately two weeks ago”), explain its effects on your exam preparation, sleep and grandfather’s health, and request action, including a quiet-hours rule after 10 p.m. and penalties for breaches. These details make the complaint relevant and give the agency a clear sense of the impact. To strengthen the response further, make the requested action more precise and professionally framed—for example, ask the agency to contact the neighbour and enforce the building’s noise policy. The reference to “young boys” is not essential and could be replaced with a neutral description of the neighbouring tenants.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The information is arranged in a sensible sequence: you introduce the complaint, explain its onset, describe its effects, and then state what you want the agency to do. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and linking phrases such as “Along with that” show an attempt to connect related consequences. The progression is clear overall, though some connections feel mechanical or abrupt, particularly “This is not enough” before introducing your grandfather’s health. The request paragraph also combines the desired action and possible penalties in a sentence that is difficult to follow. Use clearer transitions and separate the request into direct, logically ordered sentences to make the cohesion more natural and controlled.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the complaint and its consequences, with relevant phrases such as “excessive noise,” “affects my concentration,” and “take immediate action.” However, the range and control are limited by repeated general wording such as “high volume” and “noise,” as well as awkward or inaccurate expressions including “playing video games” where the source of the noise could be described more precisely, and “imposing strict rules.” Some word forms and collocations also reduce naturalness, for example “prevents me from become active” and “taking actions.” Aim for more precise complaint-related language and check that words combine naturally. This would make the letter sound more fluent and appropriately formal.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including the explanation beginning “as it is very difficult to focus” and the clause about your grandfather. However, errors occur across verb forms, sentence construction, articles, and punctuation, and they sometimes make the reader pause. For example, “The problem begin” needs a past-tense verb, while “prevents me from become” requires a gerund after “from.” The request sentence beginning “I want you to take immediate action” is also structurally unclear, and several sentences have missing spaces after full stops or inconsistent capitalisation. Practise building direct, complete sentences and proofreading verb forms and punctuation; this will improve accuracy while preserving your attempts at complex structures.
