IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You rent a flat from an accommodation agency. Your neighbour who rents their flat from the same agency plays very loud video games late at night.
Write a letter to the accommodation agency. In your letter
explain when the problem began
describe how the noise affects you
say what you would like the agency to do
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear sir,
I am writing with my dissatisfaction to let you know about the issue which is being created by other tenants at night.
I usually start working early in the morning. When other tenants come home after completing their night shift, they go to bed too late and enjoy video games with loud voice. It has been 2 weeks since I am facing this problem. Although I have polietly requested them to play their games quietly, they are not ready to listen to me.
The noise affects me in many ways. Firstly, I am not able to take a proper 8 hours sleep, so when I get up early in the morning, I normally have headache and pain in my eyes. As a result, I can not concentrate at my work because I always feel tired due to the lack of sleep.
I would appreciate it if you can provide me a separate room in a different flat with same price. This would really help to have a good sleep without being disturbed by the sound, and maintain a well-being.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Sandeep

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three points clearly: the problem began “2 weeks” ago, you explain its effects on your sleep and ability to work, and you request a move to another flat at the same price. The complaint remains focused and your request gives the agency a clear action to consider. The impact is supported with specific details, such as headaches and tiredness. The account of when the noise occurs is less precise, however: the reference to neighbours returning from night shifts and going to bed late makes the timing of their gaming somewhat unclear. Clarifying that the games are played late at night, and briefly asking the agency to contact the neighbour or investigate, would make the requested response more fully developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter has a clear progression from the complaint, to its effects, to your requested solution, and the paragraph breaks make each stage easy to follow. Linking phrases such as “Firstly” and “As a result” help show how poor sleep affects your work. The opening and closing also suit a formal letter. Some connections could be more precise: “When other tenants come home…” is followed by “they go to bed too late and enjoy video games,” which makes the sequence of events difficult to picture. In addition, “Firstly” suggests a list, but no further numbered effect follows. State the gaming time directly and use a simpler transition into the consequences to make cohesion more natural.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
Your vocabulary is adequate for explaining the complaint and its consequences, with useful phrases such as “proper 8 hours sleep,” “lack of sleep,” and “concentrate at my work.” You also use some formal language, including “I would appreciate it if” and “I look forward to hearing from you.” However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural, including “with my dissatisfaction,” “loud voice,” and “maintain a well-being.” There is also a spelling error in “polietly.” These do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and naturalness. Aim for conventional complaint-letter collocations, such as “I am writing to complain,” “at a high volume,” and “protect my well-being,” and check spelling before submitting.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the conditional request “I would appreciate it if you can provide me…” and the cause-and-effect sentence beginning “As a result.” Most of the message is understandable, and the grammar errors do not usually obstruct meaning. Some sentence patterns and forms need more control: “It has been 2 weeks since I am facing this problem” should use a consistent tense, while “a proper 8 hours sleep” needs a clearer noun phrase. The request would also be more accurate as “I would appreciate it if you could provide…” These examples show why the range is developing but not yet consistently accurate; practise tense choices and conditional structures in formal requests.
