Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear sir,

Hope you are doing well. I am Preety Acharya from Assam, India. I have recently book a flat from your agency named Grow well Agency which has a headoffice at Laxminagar,New Delhi. I booked the signature tower flat no 2, house no 214.The accomodation and ambience of the flat is very impressive but there's a problem i have been facing since 7days and that's making me really doomed. I have a neighbour infront of my flat bearing house no 216 who has been playing songs loud late at night. I ignored at the beginning but it has become a habit.

I would be very much obliged to you if you help me out with this problem. Kindly ask him to lower the volume if he wants to hear it. I requested him earlier day but he continued it again. Its his choice and i respect that but late night noise is not considerable as it hamper my sleep and work.

Thank you for your co-operation.

Yours faithfully,

Preety Acharya

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address the main points: you identify the neighbour’s late-night noise, explain that it affects your sleep and work, and ask the agency to intervene by requesting a lower volume. The timing is given as “since 7days,” although it would be clearer to say exactly when the problem started and whether it has happened every night. The impact is relevant but could be developed with a specific consequence, such as difficulty concentrating the next day. Your request is also somewhat limited: you could ask the agency to contact the neighbour and follow up if the disturbance continues. These details would make the purpose and desired action more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a recognisable structure, moving from an introduction and description of the problem to its effects and a request, followed by a suitable closing. This makes the overall message easy to follow. However, some details in the opening—your location, the agency’s head office, and several flat identifiers—interrupt the progression and are not needed to explain the complaint. The transition from “I ignored at the beginning” to “it has become a habit” is understandable, but the sequence could be clearer by explaining that the noise has continued despite your earlier patience. Paragraphing is present, though separating the background, impact, and requested action more deliberately would improve the flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the complaint, including “late at night,” “lower the volume,” and “hamper my sleep and work.” There are also attempts at more formal language, such as “I would be very much obliged,” but some choices are unnatural or imprecise in this context. “Making me really doomed” does not clearly express the effect, and “the noise is not considerable” is not the natural way to say it is unacceptable or disruptive. Spelling and word formation also need attention in items such as “accomodation” and “headoffice.” More precise, natural complaint vocabulary would make the tone clearer and more professional.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The letter includes a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, for example, “I ignored at the beginning but it has become a habit.” The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. “I have recently book a flat” needs the past participle “booked,” and “since 7days” requires a clearer time expression, such as “for seven days.” In “late night noise is not considerable as it hamper my sleep,” the article and verb agreement need correction (“the noise … hampers”). Capitalisation and punctuation are also inconsistent, particularly in “i” and the run-together address details. Checking verb forms, articles, and sentence punctuation would improve accuracy.
