Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I hope you are doing well. I am the tenant in the flat number 1102. I am writing to you to express my discomfort about the recent issue that has now been bothering me.
So the tenant in 1101 creates disturbance every night by playing video games with his friends every night. This started about two weeks ago, prior to that there had been no problem at all.
I am raising this concern with you because I had tried to talk to him a couple of times adn tried to communicate with him how I am not able to sleep because of the noise that travels to my apartment. The lack of sleep has been causing me severe headaches and my whole day and work is getting affected by it.
I would like to request you to please have a conversation with him and provide him with a warning if necessary as if this goes on for a longer period of time, I would have to leave the apartment for the sake of my peace.
I would be extremely grateful for your prompt attention to this matter.
Yours sincerely,
Swati

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The letter addresses all three required points and maintains a clear, appropriate purpose. You identify when the issue began (“about two weeks ago”), explain its effects through lack of sleep, headaches and reduced work performance, and request that the agency speak to the neighbour and issue a warning if needed. These details make the complaint credible and sufficiently supported. The statement that you may have to leave the apartment also conveys the seriousness of the situation, though a more specific request—such as asking the agency to contact the tenant promptly and confirm what action it will take—would make the proposed outcome more fully developed. Overall, the response covers the task clearly, with room to make the requested action more precise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The information is organised in a clear sequence: you introduce the complaint, explain the neighbour’s behaviour and its start date, describe the consequences, and then state what you want the agency to do. Separate paragraphs help the reader follow these stages, and the closing is appropriate. Some linking is less smooth than the overall organisation: “So” is rather conversational as a paragraph opener, while “because” and “as if” create a slightly awkward connection between the attempted conversation, the effects, and your request. The repeated “every night” in the same sentence also interrupts the flow. Using more precise transitions and avoiding repeated information would make the progression more polished.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a suitable range of vocabulary to explain the complaint and its impact, including “express my discomfort,” “creates disturbance,” “lack of sleep,” and “prompt attention.” The meaning remains clear throughout, and the tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter. However, some choices are imprecise or less natural in this context: “creates disturbance” would be more idiomatic as “causes a disturbance,” and “the noise that travels to my apartment” could be expressed more naturally as noise “coming from” or “carrying into” your flat. “My whole day and work is getting affected” is also awkwardly phrased. More accurate collocations and a consistently formal register would add flexibility and precision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The letter includes both straightforward statements and longer sentences, such as the explanation of how the noise affects your sleep and work. Most ideas are understandable, and you use past and present forms to distinguish when the problem began from its continuing effects. Some grammatical errors remain, however. In “my whole day and work is getting affected,” the compound subject does not agree with “is”; the sentence also needs a clearer structure. The clause beginning “as if this goes on” is not formed naturally for the intended condition, and the sentence about trying to communicate combines several ideas without clear control. Proofreading sentence boundaries and checking agreement and conditional structures would improve accuracy.
