Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to complain about the excessive noise coming from neighbour's flat, which has been causing a considerable disturbance and effecting my daily life.

The problem began approximately three weeks ago when my neighbour started playing video games at a very high volume late at night. Initially the noise occurred only occasionally, but now it has began a regular issue. Almost every night, I can hear loud shouting, game sounds and occasional banging noises coming from the neighbourhood flat, often continue after midnight.

This situation has had a negative impact on my daily life routine. As i have to get up early for my daily life work, the noise makes it extremely difficult for me to fall asleep and get sufficient rest. Consequently, I often feel exhausted and find it challenging to concentrate on my work on the following day. Furthermore, the constant disturbance has made it difficult for me to relax in my own home.

I would therefore appreciate if it your agency could take appropriate to resolve this matter. In the first instance, I would suggest contacting my neighbour politely request that they reduce the volume of their game, particularly during late night hours.

I hope you will treat this complaint seriously and take prompt action to ensure that all tenants can enjoy a comfortable and peacefully living environment.

Yours sincerely,

Mohammed Yasir

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0

The letter covers all three required points clearly and maintains an appropriate, firm but polite purpose. You identify when the issue began (“approximately three weeks ago”), explain its effects through difficulty sleeping, exhaustion, and reduced concentration, and make a specific request for the agency to contact the neighbour and ask them to lower the volume. These details develop the complaint well and make the requested action practical. The closing also reinforces the desired outcome of a peaceful living environment. To make the response even more complete, you could specify a further step if the noise continues, such as asking the agency to follow up or apply its noise policy. Overall, the relevant ideas are well developed, with only a small opportunity to clarify the agency’s next action.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The letter is organised in a clear sequence: purpose, onset and pattern of the noise, its effects, and the action requested. Paragraphing supports this progression, while phrases such as “Initially,” “Consequently,” and “Furthermore” help show how the information relates. The reader can follow the complaint without difficulty, and the formal opening and closing suit the genre. Some linking is slightly mechanical, particularly the repeated use of explicit transitions, and the request paragraph would flow more smoothly if the proposed action were expressed in a complete, direct sentence. The reference to the neighbour’s flat is understandable, though consistent wording would make the description more precise. Cohesion is generally effective; more natural connections between sentences would strengthen the flow further.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal complaint, including “excessive noise,” “considerable disturbance,” “sufficient rest,” and “take prompt action.” These choices communicate the problem and its consequences clearly, and some phrases show an attempt to use more formal language. However, several word-choice, collocation, or word-form errors reduce naturalness: “effecting my daily life” should be “affecting my daily life,” “daily life work” is awkward, and “peacefully living environment” is not idiomatic. “Neighbourhood flat” is also less precise than “neighbour’s flat.” These slips do not prevent understanding, but more accurate collocations and careful proofreading would make the vocabulary more flexible and polished.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response includes a useful mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including the time clause “when my neighbour started playing…” and the consequence sentence beginning “As I have to get up early…”. Most ideas remain clear, but some grammatical errors appear in key sentences. For example, “now it has began a regular issue” has an incorrect verb form and construction; “often continue after midnight” lacks a suitable finite verb form; and “I would therefore appreciate if it your agency could take appropriate…” contains missing grammatical elements. The request sentence also needs a clear structure, such as “I would appreciate it if your agency could contact my neighbour and ask them to reduce the volume.” Correcting these errors while retaining varied sentence patterns would improve accuracy.
