Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir/Madam

I am writing this letter to inform you about the recent problem with my neighbour. As you are aware, I moved into flat on 20 october with my mother.

Since last week, there is a loud noise coming from flat number 3. Yesterday, on approaching him I found that he is playing videos games with very high volume which is very unrealistic and unprofessional. He spent his whole night playing game.

With this noise it is very difficult for me to study. My entrance examination has been scheduled for next week. Due to limited time and noisy environment i am unable to concentrate. Also, this is distrupting my sleep and because of this i becomes agitated during day time. Day before yesterday I missed my bus because I could not sleep properly.

It would be appreciated if you could resolve this issue either helping me to find new flat or requesting neighbour to reduce the volume

thankyou

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three requested points: you say the noise began “Since last week,” explain that it affects your studying and sleep, and ask the agency to help by speaking to the neighbour or finding you another flat. The specific details about your entrance examination and missing the bus make the impact clear. This meets the task well, although some points could be developed more fully: for example, explain whether you have already asked the neighbour to lower the volume and why the agency should take action promptly. The request would also be clearer if you stated which solution you prefer. A more complete formal closing would strengthen the letter’s overall effectiveness.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter follows a sensible overall sequence: it introduces the problem, describes its effects, and ends with a request. Paragraphing helps separate these stages, and links such as “Also” and “Due to” make some relationships clear. However, the progression is not always smooth. “As you are aware” does not clearly connect to the move-in detail, and the shift from the neighbour’s gaming to its effects could be signposted more naturally. The final request combines two different solutions without indicating which is preferred. Use clearer transitions and organise the details so each paragraph has a distinct purpose; this would make the cohesion less mechanical and the reader’s understanding more immediate.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the situation and its consequences, including “loud noise,” “concentrate,” “noisy environment,” and “agitated.” There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “entrance examination” and “resolve this issue.” However, several word-choice and spelling problems reduce precision or sound unnatural: “videos games,” “very unrealistic and unprofessional,” and “distrupting” do not express the intended meaning accurately. “Very high volume” is understandable but could be phrased more naturally. Aim for precise, conventional expressions suited to a formal complaint, and check spelling and collocations. This will make the message sound more fluent and professional without requiring unusually advanced vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, for example, “Due to limited time and noisy environment I am unable to concentrate,” and you communicate the main events clearly. However, some grammatical errors remain in basic sentence patterns and verb forms. In “I moved into flat,” an article is needed; “Since last week, there is” would be more naturally expressed with a present-perfect form; and “because of this i becomes agitated” has an incorrect subject–verb combination. The sentence beginning “It would be appreciated if…” also needs a clearer grammatical construction for the requested action. Review articles, tense consistency, agreement, and sentence punctuation, while continuing to practise longer structures.
