Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Dear Sir/Madam,
Hope you are doing well. I am writing to inform you about a concern I have about my neighbour, Mr.John in apartment number 123. He has been playing video games late night with high volume on. I have been thinking about complaining him because of this reason. I just want to take this into your attention, he has been doing this for a while now.
The noise is very high that it is affecting me very badly. For the last couple of days, I was not able to catch a good sleep. I am a early bird as I has to leave really early for work but without proper rest or sleep, I was really struggling to manage everyday routine now. Also, I have issues like migraine and Blood Pressure. I am literally deprived of sleep now and erythinv starts to hit me. I could not focus on anything and for a few days now, I am depending on coffee to keep me awake at work or during the day. This is more than I can manage now.
I am not asking you to take any strict actions or anything aganist him. But, I want you to give him a written notice or atleast a verbal warning so as maybe he should get to know that people are affected by his doings.
I hope you will do the needful and will get back to me as soon as possible
Hopefully,

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The letter addresses all three required points: it reports the neighbour’s late-night gaming, explains the effect on your sleep and work, and asks the agency to issue a warning. The details about leaving early for work and relying on coffee make the impact clear. However, the timing of the problem is vague: “for a while now” does not explain when it began, and “for the last couple of days” refers more clearly to the recent sleep difficulty. The request for action is also somewhat tentative and could be more specific, such as asking the agency to contact the neighbour and remind him of quiet hours. These unevenly developed details keep the response from addressing every part with equal clarity.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall progression: you introduce the complaint, describe its effects, and then state what you want the agency to do. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and links such as “Also” and “But” help connect related points. The impact paragraph, in particular, develops logically from poor sleep to difficulty managing work and daily routines. Some connections are less smooth or precise, however. “I just want to take this into your attention” does not clearly link the concern to the agency, and the final request sentence contains several ideas joined loosely. The opening and closing could also follow a more consistent formal-letter style. More precise transitions and clearer sentence boundaries would make the progression feel more controlled.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the complaint and its consequences, including “high volume,” “proper rest,” “migraine,” and “written notice.” The range is nevertheless limited, and several word choices or collocations are noticeably inaccurate or unnatural, sometimes making the reader pause. For example, “complaining him” and “take this into your attention” do not express the intended meaning idiomatically; “erythinv” appears to be a spelling error that obscures the sentence. “Do the needful” is also an awkward choice for this formal request. Aim for precise, natural phrases such as “make a complaint about him,” “bring this to your attention,” and “take appropriate action.” Careful proofreading would help prevent spelling and word-form errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts both simple and more complex sentences, for example, “I am a early bird as I has to leave really early for work but without proper rest or sleep…” This shows an effort to explain causes and consequences, but control is inconsistent. Errors include “a early bird,” “I has to leave,” and the tense shift in “For the last couple of days, I was not able to catch a good sleep.” The long sentence about work and sleep also needs clearer punctuation and structure. There are some sentence forms that communicate the main message, but these recurring problems with articles, agreement, tense, and sentence construction reduce accuracy. Practise checking each sentence for a clear subject and verb, and use shorter sentences when several ideas are involved.
