Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to address the issue i have been facing since couple of weeks. I am currently staying at GC towers on 35th floor, and i have noise concerns with the neighbours in the unit 3501 having accomodation from same agency.

The issues started when when they hosted a get-together part for their anniversary. They invited guests and in the beginning it was a very nice party but then they started playing music at late night and note that the party was on Sunday night. We had jobs next days morning. I immediately complained about this to the concierge and the situation was taken care off. However, this started happening every two weeks on Sunday night. My wife has started getting headaches and we even have a pet it is affecting to his as well. We have filed multiple complaints about this issue and yet there is no action taken on this.

I sincerely want the agency to give them notice period to leave the apartment or to take alegal action as this is affecting our family's health as well as peace of mind.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three required points: you explain that the problem began after an anniversary gathering, describe its effects on your wife, pet, and family’s peace of mind, and request action from the agency. The complaint is relevant and your request for a formal response is clear. The account of how the noise developed is particularly detailed, including the initial Sunday party and the repeated incidents every two weeks. However, the effects on you are less fully explained, and the request to make the neighbours leave or take legal action is quite abrupt; you could explain what practical steps you expect first, such as contacting them or enforcing quiet hours. The response covers the task well, but some ideas need fuller development for a stronger, more consistently supported letter.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a recognisable structure: an opening that states the complaint, a paragraph describing the events and their effects, and a closing paragraph requesting action. Time markers such as “in the beginning,” “However,” and “every two weeks” help the reader follow the sequence. Overall, the information is arranged coherently. Some connections are less smooth, though: the shift from the original party to recurring noise could be signposted more clearly, and the sentence about headaches and the pet combines separate effects without explaining their relationship. The opening also gives several details before clearly establishing the central issue. Use clearer paragraph transitions and separate related points into focused sentences to make progression more natural and cohesion less mechanical.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal complaint, including “noise concerns,” “multiple complaints,” “legal action,” and “peace of mind.” These choices communicate the seriousness of the situation, and the meaning is generally clear. There are, however, some inaccurate or awkward expressions that reduce precision: “get-together part” does not convey the intended event naturally, “notice period to leave” is unclear, and “affecting to his” is not an appropriate phrase. Spelling and word-form slips such as “accomodation” and “a legal” also need attention. Aim for precise collocations and check spelling carefully; more natural wording would make the complaint sound more professional and controlled.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including a time clause in “when they hosted…” and a contrast introduced by “However.” Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “since couple of weeks” needs an article and a more suitable time expression, while “We had jobs next days morning” has problems with articles and word order. The repeated “when when” and the sentence joining the headaches and pet effects also show that proofreading and sentence control need work. There is some variety, but complex sentences are not consistently accurate. Practise articles, possessives, prepositions, and sentence boundaries, then check each sentence for a clear subject and verb.
