Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear sir,

I am writing to complain about the noise coming from my neighbour's flat, which is disturbing me late at night i rent my flat through your accommodation agency.

The problem started before two weeks ago. My neighbours are watching films listening songs and some times playing games at a very high volume. Due to this situation i am feeling very restless and i cannot sleep properly and this problem is effecting me very badly after a tirring day. I cannot concentrate on my work on the next day at my work place. The noise is seriously effecting my daily life.

I would appreciate if you could contact my neighbours and tell them to respect their other neighbours and keep their games volume down because probably every one will feel this situation very hard.

I would also likes you to remind all tenants about the noise regulations.

I hope you will resolve this problem as soon as possible.

Yours faithfuly, faryal

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points: you say the noise began “before two weeks ago,” explain that it leaves you restless, affects your sleep and concentration at work, and ask the agency to contact the neighbours and remind tenants about noise regulations. The purpose and requested action are clear. The impact is supported with relevant details, although the account of when the problem began is brief, and the request could be more specific—for example, asking the agency to investigate or enforce quiet hours if the noise continues. The comment that “probably every one will feel this situation very hard” is less clear and generalises beyond your own experience. Developing these points more precisely would make the letter more complete and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter follows a sensible overall order: you introduce the complaint, describe its effects, make requests, and close politely. Paragraphing helps distinguish the main stages, and phrases such as “Due to this situation” and “I would also” guide the reader through your points. However, the opening sentence joins the complaint and the detail about renting through the agency without a clear break, which makes the relationship between ideas harder to follow. The middle paragraph also combines several kinds of noise and several effects in a long sequence. Use clearer sentence boundaries and organise the noise description separately from its consequences. These changes would make the progression smoother and less dependent on basic linking phrases.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the complaint and its consequences, including “disturbing,” “restless,” “concentrate,” and “noise regulations.” However, the range is limited in places, and several word choices or collocations sound unnatural: “watching films listening songs,” “games volume,” and “feel this situation very hard.” Spelling and word-form slips such as “tirring,” “faithfuly,” and “effecting” also reduce accuracy and polish. Aim for precise phrases commonly used in formal complaints, such as “playing video games at a high volume,” “affecting my daily life,” and “causing considerable disruption.” This would make the letter sound more natural and appropriately formal while preserving your clear meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more developed sentence forms, including the relative clause in “noise … which is disturbing me” and the reason-and-effect structure beginning “Due to this situation.” The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur across the letter. For example, the opening sentence runs two independent ideas together, “I would appreciate if” omits the expected “it,” and “I would also likes you” has an incorrect verb form. There are also inconsistent capitalisation and punctuation choices, including lowercase “i” and missing sentence boundaries. Review sentence construction, subject–verb agreement, and verb forms, then proofread punctuation. More consistently accurate sentences would strengthen the letter.
