Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to complaint about the inconvenience being faced by my family and I at your apartment.

Firstly, I would like to inform you how this has been started. A few days ago an individual rented the apartment beside our flat and at night started playing loud video games. I have personally advised him to play games at a normal volume but he has not taken my advise seriously.

Secondly, I live with two children and my wife who requires a comfortable sleep for actively completing their routine tasks. Its been a week for which we have not slept normally. This is unbearable now and I would not tolerate it anymore.

I would appreciate it if you could take any action to resolve this issue. Kindly send him a notice explaining some rules and regulations so that he must stop using louder noises in order to maintain the serenity in the environment.

Looking forward to your prompt consideration.

Yours faithfully,

Manpreet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The letter addresses all three required points and maintains an appropriate formal purpose. You identify the start of the problem as “a few days ago,” explain that the noise disrupts sleep for your family, and request that the agency send the neighbour a notice. The impact is especially clear in “we have not slept normally” and “This is unbearable now.” This covers the task well, while showing some of the development expected at a stronger level. However, the timeline is slightly unclear: the noise began “a few days ago,” but you later say it has been a week. The effect on your family could also be explained more specifically, and the requested action could include a follow-up if the noise continues. Clarifying these details would make the response more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear overall progression: you introduce the complaint, explain when it began, describe its effect, and then state what you want the agency to do. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and signposts such as “Firstly” and “Secondly” help the reader follow the points. The closing is also appropriate for a formal letter. Some linking is a little mechanical, however, because the numbered transitions make the body read like a list. The reference in “who requires a comfortable sleep for actively completing their routine tasks” is also difficult to follow, as it is unclear who “their” refers to and how the tasks relate to the sleep problem. Use more natural transitions and make references between people and ideas explicit to strengthen the flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary to communicate the complaint, including “inconvenience,” “resolve this issue,” and “serenity.” These choices show an attempt to use more formal and less common language. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, though, which limits precision: “writing to complaint” should be “writing to complain,” “my advise” should be “my advice,” and “stop using louder noises” does not express the request naturally. “Comfortable sleep” and “prompt consideration” are also less idiomatic in this context. Aim for clear, conventional phrases used in formal complaints, such as “disturbed sleep,” “reduce the volume,” and “prompt attention.” This will make the tone more natural without requiring unnecessarily elaborate vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response includes both simple and more complex sentence forms, for example, “I would appreciate it if you could take any action to resolve this issue.” Most of the message remains understandable, and the grammar errors do not prevent the reader from following the complaint. Some errors occur in sentence structure and agreement, however. In “my family and I at your apartment,” the opening construction is incomplete or awkward; “the inconvenience my family and I are experiencing” would be clearer. “This has been started” is an incorrect passive construction, and “my wife who requires … for … their routine tasks” has unclear agreement and structure. “Its been a week for which” also needs a more accurate tense and clause pattern. Review verb forms, pronoun agreement, and sentence construction to improve control.
