Student answer (Band 5.5)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing this letter to inform you about a complaint. My neighbour who rents from the same agency is really disturbing me on late night by playing video games.

The problem began a few weeks ago and he is really annoing when playing video games and it is happening in the late night, which is really disturbing my sleep.

I need a break from after a tiring day and able to rest peacefully, but this person is disturbing my peace and sleep and it is getting severe day by day.

As your are the same agency as mine and his, i can only complaint to you regarding the issue. Please communicate with teh other tenant and make sure he is not disturbing others sleep at night by making big sound. Please take corrective actions and inform the person about the problems caused by him to others.

I am looking forward to your answer.

Yours faithfully.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three points: you say the problem began “a few weeks ago,” explain that the noise disturbs your sleep and prevents you from resting after work, and ask the agency to contact the tenant and take corrective action. The purpose of the letter is clear and the details are relevant. However, some points are less fully developed than others. For example, “late night” does not specify when the gaming usually happens or how often, and the requested action could be more precise, such as asking the agency to remind the tenant of quiet hours or investigate the complaint. Adding these details would make the request more complete and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a clear overall sequence: it introduces the complaint, explains its effects, and then asks the agency to act. Paragraph breaks help distinguish these stages, and phrases such as “The problem began” and “I am looking forward to your answer” guide the reader. Some connections are repetitive or awkward, however. The ideas about disturbed sleep and peace recur in adjacent paragraphs, while “As your are the same agency as mine and his” makes the relationship between the agency and tenants difficult to follow. Organise the impact in one focused paragraph and use clearer links, such as “As both flats are managed by your agency,” to improve progression and cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the complaint, including “disturbing my sleep,” “tiring day,” and “corrective actions.” However, the range is limited by repeated use of “disturbing” and “problem,” and several choices are inaccurate or unnatural: “annoing,” “complaint” as a verb, “big sound,” and “others sleep.” These errors are noticeable, although the main message remains understandable. Aim for more precise collocations suited to a formal letter, such as “excessive noise,” “file a complaint,” and “other residents’ sleep.” Varying the language used to describe the impact and the requested response would also make the letter more fluent and professional.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, for example, “The problem began a few weeks ago and he is really annoing when playing video games,” and “Please communicate with the other tenant and make sure he is not disturbing others sleep at night.” The meaning is generally clear, but some grammatical errors remain. In “I need a break from after a tiring day and able to rest,” the second part lacks a subject and a matching verb form; “As your are the same agency” also has an incorrect structure. Capitalisation of “I” is inconsistent, and the closing punctuation is incomplete. Use complete parallel clauses and check sentence structure, agreement, and punctuation to make the message more controlled.
