Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir,
The reason for my writing is to complain you about loud voice of video games at night come from my neighbour’s house who rents your flat. My name is Himanshi Patel and living in 315 lester street apartment.
The new family recently moved here around a week ago. I am facing this situation day after their arrival as they are five people family with 3 teenage children. They play video games everyday after 10 P.M with loud voice.
I am working as a fulltime dietitian and I need to go for work in the morning. Because of this loud noise I am unable to sleep at a time, which impacts on my work and mental stability. Currently, I am unbale to focus on my work properly and feels very frustrated as I need to deal with patients so my job requires attention.
I would be grateful if you could send them a formal notice for not doing loud voice activities after 9 P.M.
I thank you for your consideration.
Yours sincerely,
Himanshi Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three requested points: you say the noise began after the family arrived about a week ago, explain that it disrupts sleep and affects your work, and ask the agency to send a formal notice. The purpose is clear and the details about your morning work and patient-care responsibilities help explain the seriousness of the problem. To make the request more fully developed, specify what action you expect if the notice does not resolve the issue, or ask the agency to contact you about next steps. The opening “Dear Sir” also differs from the required “Dear Sir or Madam”; using the supplied greeting would make the letter better suited to an agency when the recipient is unknown.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall sequence: complaint and context, when the disturbance began, its effects, and the action requested. Separate paragraphs help the reader follow these stages, and phrases such as “Because of this loud noise” make the cause-and-effect relationship clear. This organisation is effective, though some links between details are abrupt: the family’s size and the number of teenagers are mentioned without explaining how they relate to the noise. The final thanks and sign-off provide an appropriate close. To make progression smoother and more flexible, connect related details more directly and avoid relying mainly on simple transitions such as “Because of this.”
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
Your vocabulary communicates the main issue and its consequences, with useful expressions such as “formal notice,” “focus on my work,” and “mental stability.” However, several noticeable word-choice and collocation problems make the letter less natural, including “complain you about,” “loud voice of video games,” and “five people family.” “Unbale” is also a spelling error, and “fulltime” would normally be written as “full-time.” These choices do not prevent the reader from understanding the complaint, but they show limited control of natural phrasing. Aim to learn common combinations used in formal complaints, such as “complain to the agency about the noise” and “the sound of video games.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a cause-and-effect sentence beginning “Because of this loud noise” and a clause explaining that your job requires attention. However, errors in sentence construction and verb forms are frequent enough to make some sentences awkward. For example, “My name is Himanshi Patel and living in…” lacks a subject for the second verb, while “I am unable to sleep at a time” and “feels very frustrated” do not form accurate grammatical patterns. The opening sentence also has an unclear structure. Practise building complete clauses with consistent subjects and verbs, and check agreement and articles before submitting. Clearer sentence patterns will make your meaning easier to follow.
